Outdoor Nursery School

I don't think the Audubon starts still 3 1/2 which is pretty late. Most preschools seem to start by three.

Solid educational research shows that "academics" at a young age do not make a child more successful in school long-term--in fact, quite the opposite. Young children learn so much more from playing with one another, especially in an outdoor environment where they can explore and experiment with water, sand, etc., than they do sitting still and repeating "skills" over and over. Outdoor Nursery seems like a rare gem--from what I've heard, the teachers engage the chidren in conversation and help them to get along with one another, sing songs, have story time, and lots of opportunities for art and science projects--all within a magical setting.

Does anyone know if this school has a website? I couldn't find it thru an initial search.

They do not have a website because they always have a waitlist,so no need to advertise in that way. It seems like a great place. I visited it last week with my son and turned in an application. I just hope he gets a spot. It is truly a rare gem.

This thread just shows you how different schools fit different families and you really need to visit yourself. We visited and found it the least impressive of all the preschools we toured. I do know some families that love it, but I know others who were equally unimpressed by the school.

It sounds like this school uses a "progressive" approach, which has been shown not to be very effective.

And maybe YOUR kid is missing on what is offered at the school that this PP chose. Different strokes for different folks. I also know people who loved it (and whose kids are thriving in elementary school, but who did have a rocky transition).

Shown by whom? And effective at what?

What age does ON start? I guess I'm too late for fall 2011 anyway. My younger child turns 2yo in January.

Unless they've changed it, the children need to be 2-1/2 by September.

We ended up with spots for our Pre-K son @ two schools. So, we have a spot we're reluctantly going to give up @ Audubon Nature Preschool in Chevy Chase. It's a spot for the AM class (8:30-11:30). Class starts on the week after next & follows the MCPS schedule otherwise. Fantastic school with an amazing director and Natural campus... this is such a sweet place. Please contact me directly if you or someone you know might be interested? $650/m

Thank you.

Does anyone know the address and if ONS is a full-day - what are the hours? We'd love to send our son here!
