Aldi vs. Trader Joe’s

TJs is more convenient (I hate the way Aldis handles carts) and more pleasant to shop, and has lots of specific items we like.

Aldis is pretty consistently cheaper though (and not as terrible an experience as BJ's, plus more realistic sizes for a small household)

We go to Aldis sometimes, but probably less than TJs. My wife will go to BJs, I hate to set foot in there.

There's tons of stuff TJ's doesn't have. I don't think they even have paper towels.

Love Aldi's. Much cheaper. Organic milk is usually cheaper than Costco but produce is hit or miss and sometimes they are heavily picked over. TJ is mostly frozen food and I am not a fan of that.

TJs definitely has paper towels.

Aldi is for lower class people. Like Macy vs Kmart.

Leaving aside the paper towels question, we don't do all our shopping at TJs. But a lot of it.

I have been really impressed with Aldi fruits/veggies, including that they sell organic on some items. We have Aldi in our rotation and TJ too. Also Wegmans.

Trader Joe’s seems to have problems with their refrigeration. I’ve stopped buying berries there after having the same experience. Last week I bought a quart of half and half and it was bad two days after opening (expiration date still several weeks out). I don’t have time to take things back. I wish a wegmans would open up closer to us.

I’ve stopped buying dairy from TJ’s because it ALWAYS goes bad within a few days. It drives me nuts.

I was so disappointed when I went to Aldi's for the first time.I'd heard it compared to Trader Joe's and that what I was expecting. It was NOT like that at all.

I am exactly the opposite! I can't find anything at TJs. In fact I was just at Aldi and then TJs and bought only gluten free bagels at TJs. It is like the whole store is full of nuts and frozen meals to me. I bought organic 100% grass fed beef at Aldi for $5. Oh, well, to each its own.

You can buy organic meat at Trader Joe’s. BUT if you go after a busy period and they haven’t restocked, it can certainly feel like they only have frozen meals and nuts. Maybe not even the nuts. I try to go on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

We love their whipped cream cheese, and several of their snacks. We get several other dairy items. We get kosher chicken there (cannot find that at Aldi's). We get their mini challahs. We sometimes get lox there. Also sometimes hummus and/or guac.

My wife likes several of the produce items, but you do have to be more careful, and increasingly we only get them at TJs if a second stop at aldis is too inconvenient.

I also occasionally get beer or wine at TJ's. And yeah, we do buy nuts and seeds and so forth. We actually don't get much frozen, although a lot looks tempting.

Which state does their kosher chicken come from? Thanks!

There’s a newish Aldi’s near us and I just can’t bring myself to go- DH stopped there for an onion once and brought home a whole bag of onions. Yet my parents rave about the one near their house. I know I should check it out sometime but for those who shop at both Aldi and TJs, how do they compare? It just seems like it would be similar- good for some stuff but somewhere you’d have to supplement with a stop elsewhere.

Maybe if you wear dark glasses, a wig, a raincoat, maybe then your fancy friends and neighbors won't spy you going in an Aldis and your reputation as a high society bitch won't be ruined. Or you could just keep sending your husband.

Guys, it is ALDI not Aldis. NOT plural or possessive. Just plain ALDI.

No doubt. I shop there and I am low class Euro trash immigrant here in the U.S. Only around 250K HHI. Where else would I get cheap grass fed meat that's in my budget?
