Why is Michigan such a popular school in the MD/DC/VA area?

I've never heard of anyone who chose Michigan engineering over UMCP engineering given the price difference

Thriving might be overstating it a little.

Perhaps exit your Maryland based bubble?

It's the number one public university in the country with UVa in second place. Ann Arbor is the best college town in the country.

And Michigan grads are the most insufferable in the country.

The discussion was based on people in this area. Also, back to my original point - CP's core engineering program are on par - if not superior to Michigan's engineering programs from a reputation and rankings perspective

Based on the title of the thread, 2/3 of the people reading this are outside of Maryland.

Or to answer differently, people in DC do not get in-state tuition for UMD. People who live in Virginia have UVA and VaTech as terrific options. For those of us in DC, UMD is the same as UM in terms of tuition, so may as well get a real college experience rather than being a commuter for an out-of-state tuition.

It's a great school in a great college town. Not redneck like VT or suburban like UMD.

Michigan, somehow, was founded 1817, Maryland 1856.

Detroit was founded in 1701. Believe it or not, there’s a lot of history in MI.

+1. UCLA, Berkeley and UVA have been battling it out for the top three public school slots by USN&WR for the last 27 years. Sometimes UVA has even come in no. 1 or tied for 2, but ALWAYS above Michigan.https://provost.virginia.edu/us-news-gives-uva-no-2-public-university-ranking

NP. I do. The very first thing a Michigan grad wants you to know about them is that they went to Michigan, followed by stories of how great it is to see a game in The Big House.

Insufferable is a perfect description.
