When a stylist doesn't listen

I did thank her and didn't let on that I was unhappy with it.

I completely agree that long hair is often age-inappropriate. I'm 42 and had hair about two inches below my shoulders.

That's an interesting question.....at what average age should women transition to a shorter haircut?

Ummm ok. If you really were upset and didn’t like it, you would have said something. Obviously you just wanted to complain about something on this website

You are an idiot.

Yes but someone can choose to have damaged hair.

Why does that matter? I would be livid if someone gave me layers without asking. I have never had layers.

My hair is getting thinner so now that I am 50, I'm getting shorter cuts.

Stylists started fussing at me to cut it shorter when I was 30! And my hair looked pretty good until I was 40, no gray, no need to highlight or damage.

I look pretty bad with short hair, and have had coworkers and others let me know it looks better longer, so I try to keep it at shoulder length now. Lots of stylists hate this, but many don't.

Geez people, you are paying the stylist to perform a service. Said stylist needs to do what you ask her to do, not what she thinks is right. How would you like it if you hired someone to paint your house gray and it ended up green because the painter thinks green walls look better in 50 year old homes? Or if you hired someone to put in white shaker cabinets in your 100 year old farmhouse and the cabinetmaker said "I know better, this house needs oak cabinets!"? You would be pissed. If your' paying someone for a service, they need to stay in their lane and do what you want.

I'm sorry about your haircut OP, that happened to me last time, and I'm just waiting it out and finding a new stylist when I feel my hair is long enough.

I agree I would not go back. I've found, even at my high end salon, that many oft the stylistes are not that well trained. It seems like they know a few styles and give them to most of their clients. At the salon I went to for far too long, all the white women got bobs and the asian and middle eastern women were "allowed" to have long hair. The stylists are mostly middle eastern. They were great with color but did very mediocre hair cuts. At one appointment I didn't want my hair cut since I was sick of the mom bob and the stylist pushed for just a trim. I walked out with a full on Florence Henderson shag hair cut. My hair wasn't damaged.I disagree with the posters above who say the stylist knows better.

OP here. I appreciate everyone's input, sincerely.

I did start the other thread to ask for any advice about products that might help expedite growth.

I did tell her I did not want a lot of length cut, and was fine with a few long layers.
When I saw that she was starting to cut a lot, I did stop her and say that was not what I wanted. She said "oh, don't worry, you'll love it, this will be so much better, etc." And it was already too late then. I have some layers now that are barely a few inches long!

BUT it is only hair, it will grow back, and I won't go back to that new salon anyway. I'm sorry to complain about such a silly thing!

Always always bring a picture of what you want

Why on Earth are people giving OP a hard time. She paid for a service, she said what she wanted, and the stylist overrode her. She is asking for advice because she was too polite/overwhelmed to criticize the stylist to her face after.

She recognizes what is done is done and wants advice for the future.

Stop being such mega witches.

OP this has happened to me before. Please stop apologizing to these pls giving you a hard time. You are the customer. Period! If she did something without your approval it’s completely her fault. I would be livid but probably would have done what you did because I usually don’t react that quickly.

Yeah, would never go back to that stylist again. You didn't love it, and you tried to stop her.

I think if you paid a premium for your haircut, the stylist likely felt it best to actually make your cut worth it per say.

So they feel better if they cut off “more” hair than a client requested.
Dumb logic if you ask me.
I went for a haircut once + the stylist was annoyed that I still wore my hair in its current style.
She chastised me & said, “Why don’t you wear your hair like this?? This is the STYLE.”

When I politely declined - she copped an attitude.
During my cut, she told me she needed me to get out of the chair and stand up.
I was eight months pregnant!!!!
