Change what store you taking them to shop in. Stop going to...wherever it is you buy a $600 coat. Try Macys. |
I should add that DC is a adult size male in HS and is stabilizing in terms of growth (I think). |

I think you should agree on a number of coats, shoes and dress up outfits needed and then purchase together at a reasonable price the parent is comfortable with.
I think you should come up with a number for what you consider a reasonable price for 5-6 pairs of pants which include 1 pair of khakis and 1 pair jeans 5-7 t shirts / casual shirts 2-4 sweaters / sweatshirts 1-2 packs of underwear 1-2 packs of socks Then your kid can buy what he needs with that money. If he wants designer jeans or $100 sweats, he might have to make do with some things he already has or wear them 2x a week. |
Okay fine. My daughter grew last summer, and upon starting school for 10th grade had no pants that fit, plus she'd completely changed her style (and since that change was "I think I want to stop wearing so much black" I was all too happy to throw money at this). So for 10th grade, I spent $500 on pants, shorts, underwear, t-shirts, sweatshirts and sneakers. She does not wear coats. It was over about three months. After that, I told her flat out "I've spent $500 on clothing for you. No more." Last month I bought her a night-shirt and a pair of pjs, but other than that, no clothes. I am thinking that come August, I will put $500 cash in an envelope and go with her so she can use the cash and see how it dwindles. I think that will make a bigger impact on her than a $500 visa card or whatever. |
What is your question? If you are ok with those prices then its fine. You can get clothing a lot cheaper but you aren't interested. Give him a set amount and let him decide. When he can only get a few things with the money, he'll learn. Or, tell him to get a job and pay for it. |
| I’ll add that as adult size Hs child is capable of earning money if he wants a $600 coat. What does a Patagonia or Northface coat cost? $300? If he wants Canada Goose, he can earn the other $300 himself. |
Teenagers don't want to buy underwear that comes in PACKS. They want to buy Aerie or PINK or GapBody. |
