| OP here. Really appreciate those who took the time to offer advice...especially on the long pole! We’re not at the Madlax tryout (too far!) but to be honest I wouldn’t be opposed to it if it wasn’t for the distance. My kid did a clinic with them a few years back with a friend and really enjoyed it. Coaches were really great. Never saw the Coach Maddux guy from the article. Second and final tryout is next week...hopefully he can shake off the nerves and come back stronger. Fingers crossed! |
Best of luck to your son! I think you have the right attitude when you say you son "....really enjoyed it. Coaches were really great". The reality is that there is not one top-to-bottom dominant program in the DMV area. You really have to look at each club by the year your son will be playing and go from there. The variance in teams, coaches, etc. is fairly large within a club so the only thing that matters are the club teams for your son's age/grade. Also don't listen to the the people who mock "B' teams or say they are for suckers. Just go to the HoCo standings and see how many divisions there are and you will see the vast majority of kids are not going to be playing in the Elite division. To those people I guess if you are not an Elite player no need to bother playing at all. If you son loves the sport, the team and the coaches and wants to play competitive lacrosse play where you can. My sons have played both B and Elite and could not tell any difference in their enjoyment of the sport and their experiences. It should also come as no surprise to anyone that an A team is going to get more focus and investment than a B team at a club. End of the day they are your dollars to invest or not. Most club coaches are pretty honest about where your child stands in terms of playing level, mix that with some self awareness about your child's skills and all should be good. Things change a lot at these ages and working hard towards any goal is a positive lesson for anyone. |
