This isn’t a REAL magnet. Those students at Loiederman possess no talent. A real visual and performing arts magnet holds AUDITIONS. That’s why it’s such a mediocre school you’re mixing students with potential with kids who have no business on a stage. MCPS when are you going to stop caring about less deserving students feelings and start having audition for these arts programs.

I knew you'd show up

The nice thing about school is that it's a place where children can learn. So a child who has a strong interest in the arts has a place to go learn more about art and develop their talent. I'm glad the teachers there do not choose to educate only students they decide "have potential." Did you have your career path chosen at 11 years old?

The schools were picked based on poverty levels at the chosen schools and there is no transportation because it would be cost prohibitive. Many families arrange carpools to make it work.

The choice system was developed for the local kids and they do get transportation.

And Loiederman does have auditions for advanced classes. A talented 6th grader can be placed in an advanced program.

With talentless 8th graders who got into the “advance” class by seniority?

The nice thing about the arts is some students see as a career rather than a hobby. Where are these Loiederman alumni? I bet 80% of that school have choose different pathways or was put in that school because they were screwed by the lottery program. I’m sorry if your child is not talented enough to get into a school like BSA or Duke Ellington but MCPS needs to add auditions to art programs like VAPA or Blake signature program. In the entertainment world, we only care about the best and we need more serious programs to build in that mindset.

Yes, it is.

It isn't a real audition-only program, but then it doesn't claim to be, either.

I have been a vocal proponent of an audition-only performing arts magnet in MCPS, but this is MIDDLE SCHOOL. Ideally, a child who is interested in the arts but did not have access to dance/theatre/instrumental music through private lessons would have three years in middle school to learn and improve, and then be prepared for an audition-based high school.

+1 this. An audition-only performing arts magnet makes sense at the high school level. These are 11-13 year old children - giving them access to arts education is more important than creating a conservatory program at this stage.

Arts integrated education benefits ALL kids in their educational careers, not just kids with so-called "talent" (which is highly subjective btw):

OIB at Loiederman with many in our neighborhood. My DC is a 7th grader and the art options are fantastic for her.

How is talent subjective? A trained dancer with classical technique would clearly be better than a student who dance training comes from a public school education system. Same goes for any area for the arts. The thing about Loiederman is that it’s a lottery, you have kids that don’t want to be there compared to students who want to build on their craft and it shows with Loiederman showcases. If these students see the arts as a hobby then why should we waste our money and resources for an arts magnet high school.

Alumni? Of a middle school program?
1) the program hasn't existed that long to have that many alumni
2) test-in programs with young kids don't see their alumni necessarily go into the specialty area as a career either. For many it is a hobby or an interesting way to spend middle school/HS years. That's ok. If you're only looking at it as professional training, then it would have to be a MUCH smaller program.

I went to CAP, and few of my classmates are in media/TV/journalism. Not none, but not a lot.

As long as PP is speaking of "wasting our money and resources for a [specialty] magnet high school", I wonder how many TJ graduates or Blair SMACS graduates go into science/technology/math/computer science. What percent does it have to be for PP not to consider it a waste?

MCPS will never give us a whole magnet arts high school, lack of interest.

Jesus H. Christ, you are a horrible person. This is public school, not "the entertainment world."

Also, Loiederman and Parkland receive the most interest, both by in-boundary students and OOB lottery. Argyle is the one with students that "was put in that school because they were screwed by the lottery."
