What colleges give really good merit aid?

Anonymous
Please look at the finances of the colleges carefully especially small ones. We have had colleges failed recently and most were offering merit aid to students to enroll. You don’t want to have kid enroll and the college fails, and your kid has to transfer without all the credits and need to find money again. Lowest net cost is not necessarily the best.

yes, this is a great point. Proceed with caution when considering small schools with small endowments that offer extensive aid.

Why is this question beyond vague? I imagine there are people here who have a kid or know of someone who got a large merit scholarship. If so, they could share that info.

My kid got a full ride.

Where?

Is this per year or a lump sum?

This is PP. These were annual awards, most with requirements for minimum GPA to maintain the award for all 4 years.

Reasons why this post is vague: What does "really good" FA mean? Full ride or 20K merit off per year? Does the student have tippy top SATs and GPA? Is the student a white boy from the suburbs or a URM? The OP gave ZERO information, so how can anyone give advice?

Alabama is very generous. I know a few people who got a full ride without lifting a finger. Not even an application.

Yup. My nephew from Michigan benefited from this. Alabama reached out to him. Full ride in the Honors program. Just graduated a couple of years ago.
