It is the ONLY thing that was able to get the funk out of DH’s workout gear. I tried baking soda, oxiclean, and vinegar (I typically use these in the wash anyway), but Hex was the clear winner!

OP again, I didn't see this before I replied. Might try this too. I thought I couldn't at first because I have a ton of contact allergies and avoid many brands of detergent. But this says it's hypoallergenic. Wonder what's in it?

You don't have to do all these tricks, just a capful of bleach int the wash will kill the bacteria!

I've got them soaking in vinegar and water now, and will try washing with borax or oxyclean. I've tried all these in the past, but perhaps not in big enough quantities (ie, just a little scoop of oxyclean for load of wash.)
I do love to hang the laundry outside, but am not doing that this month because of our bad pollen allergies.

I guess I will have to start washing the stinky polyester stuff separately, just because of its tendency to contaminate the rest of the load.

I wash all workout/active clothes separately. Cut down on the amount of detergent you are using (use half or so, even though it is counter intuitive with the funky clothes), add vinegar for the rinse cycle, and do a second wash.

I'd just trash the one pair and buy another, then use a combo of all these ideas going forward. If you were already complaining about an entire load of laundry but what's one pair to stress over.

OP here. Soaking in vinegar and washing with borax worked! The clothes just smell ever so slightly of vinegar now. I’ll get the hang of this.

Be sure to use hot water with these suggestions. You need the heat to maximize the chemical reaction with these cleansers/bleaches. Wash the shorts inside out. Put immediately into a high heat dryer.

Lysol laundry sanitizer really helps with stinky clothes.

Of course you can. What do you think commercial laundries do with polyester gym outfits from schools? Trust me, they are not drying then on delicate.
