Would you include 120's IQ tests with inconsistent subsection scores in appeal?

No - not high enough. Don’t worry about it. Focus on supplementing gen ed at home.

The GBRS is why your kid was rejected. I doubt that a 127 WISC will be enough to overcome the GBRS, but I wish you the best of luck.

Really seems like a 127 wisc should be given more weight than the teacher review here where all the test scores are similar. I mean come on. Half of AAP is kids with lower IQs than this if they tested everyone.

PP's kid is almost certainly smarter than half of the kids in AAP. That doesn't mean the kid will get accepted. FCPS places way too much emphasis on the teacher reviews.

We got unlucky this year with a new teacher. My kid is a smart, extrovert kid and asks lots of questions. Perhaps the temperaments of teacher and kiddo did not match. We are Asian and I read a few other threads and maybe that’s another reason for discrimination.

OMG. Stop with the racial bias. Please. Maybe your kid just isn’t shining as much as you think. Maybe your kid is doing just fine. But stop with the racial discrimination narrative. It’s pathetic.

When aap rejects a kid and that kid goes on to score in the 120s on the WISC then aap got it right. This is the process working very well.

Now of course the rub is that many kids accepted into aap won’t score above 130 on the WISC either. It’s not fair. But keeping out the 120 kids is exactly what aap is trying to do.

20% of FCPS is in aap? 20% of FCPS kids would not have IQs over 130. So while it seems unfair, you can’t blame FCPS for trying to control the aap population better.

But they put in so many kids who wouldn't score above 130 on a WISC. They even put in so many kids who score in the low 120s or even lower on the CogAT. FCPS is controlling the AAP population by making a bunch of very arbitrary choices, but those choices aren't necessarily better. I think the vast majority of kids currently in AAP would have IQs in the low 120s or even lower if they took a WISC.

Anonymous wrote:I would submit the DAS-II but not the WISC. DAS-II is slightly stronger overall, and the 99th percentile verbal score might be compelling to the committee. For the WISC, they don't care that much about the VSI, and the average FRI score could be a problem.

For your letter, I would focus on the verbal abilities and how your child's needs in language arts cannot be met in general education. The 121 nonverbal reasoning score shows that your child should be able to handle the AAP math.

Thank you for this advice. I think I am going to just submit DAS-II. There are lots of good writing samples from home I can submit (DC write random stories at home all the time), so hopefully it is supportive of the assertion. I thought school sample was good, but a bit hard to read.

I just want to say good luck- your child will thrive in AAP with these scores. (I have an older child in AAP). I’m hope the appeal works, this system is so wonky.

Thank you, you are very kind. I don't have high hopes but won't cost me (any more than what I have already spent) to appeal.

WISC-V FSIQ is 126, GAI 130. Looks like subsection scores VCI:116 and FRI:140 are mainly what they look at? Hoping the very high FRI gets her in on appeal?? Thoughts?

Sorry new poster here - these are our WISC results, considering appealing or not. Wanted to know what others that have gone through the appeals process thought.

Yes. I would use those scores.

OP here.. I had a meeting with her and she recommended including both WISC-V and DAS-II. I am not sure if she was familiar with different subsections of the tests. Did anyone have experience in AART’s familiarity with IQ tests?

She reiterated that the committee let in a lot less kids at the school and across the board this year.

This is what happens when parents with no psychological training try to be experts on things they don’t understand. They don’t care about VSI? Are you joking? That’s one of the most heavily G-loaded scores in the FSIQ and is the best predictor of math abilities. Of course they care about the VSI. Yeesh.

WISC was 143 and DD did not get in.
