Does sending money overseas to pay for relatives expenses count? cos that's what happens to most of my income that's not spent on my kids...

Why would that not count?

because it's not technically a charity? Although I would agree that the spirit might be the same ...

I am sad to say that we give only about 2% of gross - and we have a sizeable income. I realize this is totally within our power to change, but I just can't imagine giving more than 5k to charity a year when we need to save for our retirement and children's college.

We probably give 4-5% of gross. A combination of church, schools (including a capital campaign at one that is significant by our standards, although plenty of people are giving way more to it) and various other causes that tend not to add up to as much. Last year was probably $20k total. This year will be lower.

Of course it is. Charities help people. If you do so yourself you are cutting out the middle man.
Charities also charge high operating expenses. If you do so yourself and the help goes to someone in need. You have just saved the charities a lot of money

I know it's a charitable act, but some might see it as just family duty...I probably do 3% to standard charities, maybe 7-8% to family abroad...
