If your DH has otherwise had a good connection with him, that's the most important thing. What does his parent whose parent the grandfather is want as far as support?

This exactly. Go see him while he’s still alive. Say your goodbyes. That’s what’s important.

Travel insurance is a joke. So much fine print. Very hard to collect on.

This is OP. This is a good point I hadn’t thought of. Family would be coming in from across the country. No arrangements have been made yet, no.

+1. My inlaws went on a European river cruise while they each had an ailing parent. Not literally dying, but both did end up dying within a few months. They explicitly told everyone they did not wish to be told until they returned.

Most cover the traveler if he’s sick plus it covers things like strikes, acts of terrorism and such. Read what’s covered, you’ll be surprised. The policies that allow you to cancel for any reason are simply to expensive.

Go on the trip and deal with it after, your husband being there probably won’t make a difference any way. Unfortunately all of us deal with this issue at some point. Going on this vacation doesn’t make you the bad relative.

Depends, I had some for a direct relative which meant children or parents. My MIL was admitted to the hospital while on vacation with out kids while we ourselves had gone on a vacation. We had travel insurance and it covered our cancelled rental car, lost hotel deposit and any change fees for taking an earlier flight. This was with allianz. I thought OP’s relative had not passed yet but was very ill and probably will. So if you get it now and it covered direct relatives it could work. You don’t know until you ask. All these people saying no insurance do you have experience with it? I have used it twice. And claims were super easy, submitted my paperwork online and myhcresit card was reimbursed In Two days.

I was able to use the travel insurance on my credit card when I had to cancel a trip because my mom's cancer, previously in remission, came back and she needed my help.
