| Hm for us that would be $1,080 per month for our family of 3. We spend around $200/week ($100-$150 on groceries and $50-100 on eating out) without breaking a sweat... |
| Also, OP, note that the $12/day grocery average is not per person. The story was about how much the average American spends per day, which they got by analyzing the Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The BLS data are per "consumer unit," which can be a family, a single person, or two people making financial decisions together. For 2017, the average consumer unit spent $11.95 per day on "food at home" and an additional $9.22 per day on "food away from home." But that averages in both single people and families of six, so it's not an especially good metric to base your own spending on. |
Wow! Can you tell me an average week of dinners? |
I’d love to know too! |
| Family of 3 (one adult, two kids) and we spend about $150/week on groceries + $50/week on Plated meals for 2 that actually serve 3 quite nicely. |
Sure, we usually do a potato and meat roast one night, a pasta dish night, rice and veggies stir fry night, a pizza night (homemade), veggie enchiladas or quesadillas night, I also usually make a hearty soup once a week (like a lentil or chowder), all of these leave leftovers for lunches. Pretty simple stuff. Generally serve dinner with greens and carrot sticks, etc Definitely not a lot of meat. Breakfasts are cereal/granola, Greek yogurt, fruit during the week, pancakes or eggs/bacon on the weekend |
Forgot to mention, we also eat a lot of beans and things like quinoa and cous cous cous and polenta. |
Hahaha couscous, not the cha Cha Cha version above silly phone
|
Que all the liars who claim to spend $100/wk on groceries for their family of 6. |
Plate loads of BS, that's what. |
Umm, PP provided a list. I can easily buy enough of everything on it to feed three for under $100 a week. If you can't, you may be shopping at the wrong stores. |
I think it’s posdible if you don’t drink any coffee or don’t have pets. Our little min pin eats $21 a week plus treats and toys. |

Today we got half a baby cow for $700, processed and very clean, all wrapped and frozen. It filled our upright freezer to the top and packed our inside freezer on 3 shelves. Last November we paid a processing fee of $100 and got a whole deer free. You cannot get more organic than that. Lean meat fed well without any antibiotics or filthy contamination.
Add bulk shop pantry and paper items, canned goods. In the summer we stock up on farm vegetables and fruit. We will need another upright freezer so I can freeze bread and cooked food we cook on the weekends. We spend less for a year or more of food than what some of you spend in a month. |
Child might be 18 months old...then it is quite possible. |
I have no kids and I spend less than $84/ week at the grocery store, including toiletries/ cleaners etc. That seems high to me. |
