All Inclusive Resorts

I was recently at the Omni in Cancun. The food was indeed mediocre. I went with longtime friends who are all mothers and none of us wanted to make decisions about where and when to eat, so it worked out.

A few years ago, we stayed at a VRBO at the Ixchel Beach Hotel on Playa Mujeres. It was great because we had the benefits of beach-side bar and food service, and could easily walk to restaurants on the beach and in town and get good food. There are no cars on Playa Mujeres, but you can rent a golf cart for a few hours or a day and explore the island if you are looking for an adventure. To me, this would be a good balance with a 5 year old child.

We loved the Iberostar Paraiso Maya.
Lots of pretty good restaurants and buffets to choose from, plus they always had grills going on the beach and an ice cream shot at the pool.
At night we'd go to they're shopping area, where there was a really good taco and crepe places.
It was my first AI experience, (done a bunch since then), and I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it.

Aside from the mediocre food reports, there is something very offputting to me about grown adults drinking all day long simply because its "free." Plus free alcohol jacks the price up for everyone, even those who only want a few drinks.

We've done both All-Inclusive and not, and have really loved all-inclusive. It feels so luxurious not to have to plan for transportation, carry $, etc. It's still nice to get out a few times (especially a visit to a Cenote!!!!), but we've found the food at high-end resorts to be just as good. And it's not like downtown Playa is a hotbed of culture.

A few resorts we've stayed at and enjoyed---Valentin Imperial Maya (though it's adults only, from our pre-kid days) and the Azul Sensatori. We stayed at a Sandals (I can't remember which one) and didn't love it, but visited the Maroma Beach one and it seemed much better. A lot of them have fabulous amenities for families with kids--the Azul Sensatori had high chairs, cribs, bottle warmers, awesome play areas, baby food, kid-specific activities...depending on what you're looking for. We haven't been in 5 years, so I'm sure there are a whole host of new places.

Enjoy!

I do not get people's love for them. Unless they too are cheap and tacky.

Sounds like you stay at cheap tacky AIs. There are some upscale ones but they're $$$$
