Expectant and Postpartum Moms
Let's save that argument for another day, shall we? |
| OP, it really depends on your baby and what you want to put up with. Bottle warmers can be a hassle and don't always work well (and they take up space). You shouldn't microwave breast milk (you can microwave formula). Some babies don't mind cold breast milk or formula, other do; most will drink milk at room temperature. |
| I think warming the bottle is something our parents did, my mom came up with a zillion reasons why I should do it but I only warmed the milk to room temp if it was expressed frozen milk or in the first few month to take that zing out it. With my first - I quicky learned that I set up high expectations when he switched over to regular milk and would only drink it warm. When #2 came I made sure to get her used to cold and now both drink it like that. It is so inconvenient to have to warm the bottle and is just a personal taste with no medical merit to it. |
| I asked my mom about this, and she said that drinking cold milk can hurt a baby's lungs. I have no idea if she was basing that off of anything she had actually read, or if she just was just trying to get me to buy a bottle warmer or something though. |
| Why did that lady feel the need to be so judgmental with her pushy breastfeeding agenda? ugh. I dont get that attitude. |
It is so easy in the car, restaurants... my baby doesn't drink warm milk

we warmed bottles with our first - never again! We got caught on a long road trip where she wouldn't take the bottle because the milk was 'cold'. i remember waiting to use the microwave at some nasty gas station to warmit for the 20 sec to get it 'just right'.
My advice - give it cold or room temp. Don't get trapped as we did. |
| another mom who made the mistake of warming the milk... my DD refused anything that was not the perfect temp. even when we added whole milk to the routine, she wanted it warm. stick with room temp, no chill. |
| We never warmed bottles. DD drank the expressed breastmilk cold, right out of the fridge. And same with formula once we switched to that. We did it because friends gave us the advice early on -- so great! |
| I agree with all the PPs who say not to open that door! If your baby doesn't know that warmed-up-bottles are an option, he or she won't clamor for it. Skip the bottle warmer. |
You know what's even nicer? When someone answers the question that was asked, instead of being a douche and throwing out unsolicited advice about breastfeeding versus bottle feeding. I'm just saying. OP, forget the bottle warmer. You don't need it. |

Bottle warmer=waste of money.
I nursed my baby, but did a lot of pumping and I would store it in the fridge, shake it up when I needed it and the baby drank it cold. If we had used formula, I probably would have just used room temp water (probably out of a bottle or brita that sat on the counter). For frozen breast milk, I did put it in a bowl of hot water to dethaw because apparantly you are not supposed to microwave it. However this was only to dethaw, not to simply warm it for the baby to want to drink it. |
How do you know this woman didn't try to breastfeed but physically couldn't? Way to judge. |

Skip the bottle warmer.
If you can get your baby to drink non-warmed milk that is great. I have two toddlers (1 and 2.5) they both still insist on warmed milk (at bedtime only now for the older one). I never owned a bottle warmer. But, apparently I have picky kids. It is a pain in the but when we are out -- if she is really thirsty she'll drink room temp. I think the problem arose from almost exclusively breast feeding, they just wnat it at 98 degrees. Its not like I started out warmer bottles, I just go sick of getting them slapped away or spit out. |
