My son played on the varsity team as a freshman for a very competitive WCAC team. Minimum playing time but the benefit is practicing against better competition. The best outcome is for freshman varsity players to play some games on JV to have an opportunity to get some game time in.

It depends on a coach. My son, a sophomore, was a starter on his varsity team and played most games without being subbed out.

In most cases, if you have freshman or soph doesn't make varsity, but plays on a club team, it makes more sense to have them focus on their club practices and games.
