Expectant and Postpartum Moms
Having to wait to change the sheets I understand, but couldn't your partner help move the bedpan away if the nurses can't come quickly? |
You get Ampillicin or Erythromycin. That doesn't touch a UTI. |
Of course your partner, or whomever is in the room can help you. That's great if you have someone present all the time. |
Physician here. Ampicillin absolutely WILL treat a UTI. It is effective against gram-negative organisms (such as E. coli) that cause UTI's. Erythromycin - not so much. Covers gram positives but not gram negatives. |
| I delivered last weekend (at sibley, if it's relevant to anyone) with an epidural & no catheter. Apparently I expressed a vehement objection early in labor when we were discussing possibilities for pain relief (I don't remember but my husband says this is the case). I got the epi at 7 cm, they asked me a few times if I needed to pee, but didn't harass me about the catheter--and I didn't pee. |
That's very good to hear. I wonder if it all depends on who your doctor is and not necessarily the hospital. I could be wrong though. In any case, may I ask which practice (and/or doctor) delivered you? I would also really love to avoid a catheter, but am definitely planning on having an epidural. Thank you! |
I'm going to guess that she gave birth fairly soon after the epidural, or else they would have insisted that she either a) pee on her own or b) get a foley catheter (the continual catheter) or c) get a "straight cath" which means they go in and out, just to empty the bladder once (they do this sometimes if you are having trouble pushing and you haven't peed in a while). |
| You could try to see if you can empty your bladder before having the urinary catheter placed. However, most women are not able to empty their bladder completely with an epidural. It's a good idea to have a empty bladder during labor because it helps the baby's head move down, and if you bladder is full after delivery, you could have increased bleeding because your uterus cannot contract to firm up your uterus. |
| I'm extremely prone to UTI's to the point that my DR. has prescribed me medication to take throughout the year and the catheter was fine! In all honesty I have no idea why you wouldn't want one. At that point I had to get up to urinate every 30 minutes and let me tell you that ain't fun...nor would a bed pan be. I was actually totally bummed when they took it out. Talk about making MY life easier! |
| The last thing I wanted to worry about during delivery was urinating in a bedpan. Get the catheter. I still talk about how great the cather was and that every woman should have one during their last trimester (jk). I was up so often peeing the catheter was a Godsend!! |
