DC retrocession into Maryland

Why should the people of Wyoming be punished?

Was just about example, but Wyoming voters already have voted that have too much weight:

"Each vote cast in Wyoming is worth 3.6 as much as the same vote cast in California. How can that be, you might ask? It's easy to see, when you do the math. Although Wyoming had a population in the last census of only 563,767, it gets 3 votes in the Electoral College based on its two Senators and one Congressman. California has 55 electoral votes. That sounds like a lot more, but it isn't when you consider the size of the state. The population of California in the last census was 37,254,503, and that means that the electoral votes per capita in California are a lot less. To put it another way, the three electors in Wyoming represent an average of 187,923 residents each. The 55 electors in California represent an average of 677,355 each, and that's a disparity of 3.6 to 1."

You can’t take away statehood. This would require a constitutional amendment. That’s even less likely than DC becoming a state - and it never will. DC can either stay as it is or join Maryland. I don’t understand why the people there are so against joining with Maryland. They should join and soon. Before the census, so they can get their own representative in the house.

My guess is people are rightfully thinking that DC has as much of a claim to 2 senators and a representative as Wyoming does

The current set up unfairly benefits Republicans

Except that it would kill the GOP faster.

There is no reason for DC to be a state. They are a city, and not the biggest city by a long shot.

Bigger than two states. The residents pay taxes. End discussion.

No thanks. If I cared that much about representation I wouldn’t live here. It’s not as if it’s a secret that DC has no representation. MD has higher taxes too.

Then we should subdivide all states into additional states. All cities should be states. In fact, every town of 20k people should be its own state.

DC will never be a state. Keep fighting the good fight though!

It may well become a state in the next 20 years

You keep moving the goalposts. Wy and vt are states and almost exclusively rural. Why is a jurisdiction that is more populous punished just for being exclusively urban?

The Constitution is a living document and can be changed. Admit it, you dont want one or two more Dem. Reps in the House

Of course it can be updated. I'm a Democrat and would love additional Democratic states. Most here are probably the same. The difference is that most of us understand the political reality of DC's situation. DC will never be a state unless you can find another state to balance it out ala Hawaii/Alaska. Maybe you break TX into two states and they'll allow DC to become a state but DC will never be made a state without giving the Republican's something as well.

It only takes an act of Congress to add a state. If the Democrats control both houses and the presidency they don't have to give the Republicans anything.

If current population trends continue the country is going to be ungovernable soon, with 70% of the population living in 30% of the states. We're going to have to have either a revision of the Constitution or a realignment of state borders -- probably with the creation of more states.

Oh please.

DC is a minor city, and would be a joke state.

What if people actually born in DC (like me!) Were given a form of reparation - no federal taxes. Everyone else did knowingly move into a district, not a state.
