How does a 2 hour delay help anything? Either close school or make it a regular day!

You are a bad parent if you make your kids walk.

You’re such a loser.

I’m not OP but she’s a “bad parent” if she has to work and her kids have to walk? Go to hell. You’re an anonymous troll spewing negative crap at strangers; I’m sure you’re a happy and fulfilled person.

OP is making the point she’s in a jam. Also millions of kids in vast swaths of the world have walked outside at 15 degrees with no issue. Sorry your precious snowflakes are soft as puppy sh$t.

Overnight low is 2F where I am. I have to agree with pp that if you let your kid walk tomorrow morning, I think you meet the “bad parent” criteria.

The “overnight low” is not relevant to the walking to school temp following a two hour delay the next morning (11am, in the sunshine).

Do you think Canadians just never go to school?

In checking the websites of a few Canadian school districts, it appears that what they do in extreme cold is keep their schools open but cancel busing.

Try that here and see how it goes over.

Even Chicagoans who are use to snowy winters and lake effect snow don’t have school in this cold. Depends on what you are use to. No one around here is use to 12f.

It’s -40 in Chicago with the wind chill. Not even remotely close to what we have here.

My 7th grader will be walking to the bus stop tomorrow at 9:20. She’ll live.

Why don’t you ask them? I feel sorry for your kids.

I am sure. That’s why it’s easy to have a baby but hard to raise them.

I am laughing in disbelief that numerous people think it is akin to child abuse to let kids walk to the bus stop or school tomorrow morning. There are parts of the US where it is temps like these for much of the winter. Do you think kids in those areas do not attend school? Tell your kids to dress appropriately, bundle up and walk to the bus. Geez.

Diesel engines on area school-buses are not equipped to start easily in low temperatures. The two hour delay is to ensure that mechanics can start all buses to avoid failures once kids are on board.

That is the ONLY reason, since a two hour delay from 8 to 10 am doesn't affect the temperature by that much.

I was just thinking it gives the school bus drivers more time to defrost the busses.

PP you replied to. The diesel starts to gel at low temps, and unlike in northern states we don't have a ton of dry blocks to heat every engine. That's the problem with being in an area with moderate yet variable weather. We can't afford to waste too much funds on cold-weather gear, because some years we don't need it.

And with climate change creating a lot more extreme weather events, soon a lot more areas will need to be prepared for ALL KINDS OF WEATHER and emergency management systems. Vote for the right politicians, people.

I’m reporting this post. It’s factual, informative, rational, and not the slightest bit snarky. It doesn’t belong on DCUM.
