Congratulations to the 3 MCPS Seniors who are Intel/Regeneron finalists

It is evidence that MCPS was not happy that the 4th/5th grade HGCs were full of Asian Americans and not enough Hispanic and African Americans. That was (and is) the achievement gap that MCPS is trying to close by rename the HGC to CES and adding the cohort criteria.

It is evidence that MCPS was not happy that the middle school magnet at Eastern and TPMS were full of Asian Americans and not enough Hispanic and African Americans. That was (and is) the achievement gap that MCPS is trying to close by adding the cohort criteria.

Eventually, Blair SMAC selection criteria will be changed too to "close the achievement gap"...

Eventually, there will be no more Regeneron Finalist from MCPS...

So you’re saying non Asian kids are incapable of high achievement because they’re inherently not as smart as Asians? OK, racist.

A
I believe that there are "smart" kids from all races. However, "smart" is not the only criteria to get into MCPS magnet. Ask MCPS.

SAT score is not the best example. But "All racial/ethnic groups saw an increase in SAT total score from 2017 to 2018, with the largest gains observed for Asian students. African American MCPS graduates scored 1035 on the SAT, up 15 points from 2017 and significantly higher than their peers across the state (956) and the nation (946). Hispanic students also made gains in performance earning a score of 1044, a 7-point increase from 2017....."

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/press/index.aspx?pagetype=showrelease&id=8231

What MCPS sees is that the achievement gap is getting larger and larger. So how to close the gap? (1) maximize the increase by Hispanic and African Americans and, (2) minimize the increase by Asian Americans; and (3) change the magnet acceptance criteria using the "cohort criteria" fit perfectly!!

DP

It’s not only the PP who feels this way, take it up with MCPS. They are the ones obsessed with race and closing the Acheivement Gap.

MCPS has made that the one and only priority. Go to the BOE meetings and read their press releases. MCPS has made this heir entire focus.

The person is saying when you move from a merit based system to a diversity-by-race system with a 95% score bar you might not win any future merit-based contests.

Get it?

Not the PP, but this is a ridiculous argument. By definition, these three young people are among the most accomplished in the entire nation. They aren't just the 99% kids. They are the 99.99999 percent outliers who would be swept into the magnet whether or not some "undeserving 95 percenters" are also admitted.

For your info, most of the Asian kids are American-born, hence American kids. Don't be a racist. Thanks to such kids our country will have a great future. We should all celebrate.

Oh god! They didn't use cohort to select finalist???!!! This is unfair!

It's been that way for a while. There was an article about how something like 80% of the winners are children of immigrants (think HlB).

2015-16 winners:

2014 winners:

Wait, not illegal immigrants from south of the border? I thought all immigrants were exactly the same!

I got news for you.. Trumpsters don't even want HlB visa immigrants.

The whole Asian/cohort thing is so tiresome. I don't know the answer, but I do know that this is not about a race of "smarter" kids. Asian families, for the most part, value education and invest in many additional educational opportunities for their kids. These kids are better prepared when it comes time for various assessments. They spend more time in classes, in music lessons, practicing, working. That pays off for them in these competitions. It may also work against them when other types of skills are needed. I just hope they take joy in the time they spend on these activities. Congrats to all the kids who are working at this level.

You may be right. They are only working, working, working. That is the reason that MCPS should not discriminate against them and let them take their rightful place in magnet programs based on their academic performance. Then everyone else can rejoice that they have no joy in their lives. It is a fair exchange, no?

Oh, man, these kids did something great. You don’t get to that level without some joy and passion for the subject. Go spew your racist hate in another thread.

There were 20 students from Maryland out of 200 as semi-finalists. Not all from MCPS. Amazing number of high achievers from such a small state.

As an Asian American, I agree. Do I upset that there is almost zero Asian American in NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB? No, I know that these sports need different skill sets. Should NFL draft consider race? No.

I enjoy the sports whenever played by the best athletics.
