The Severn School

That used to be true but certainly has changed over the last decade as they have had a top football program (think ranked in nation) with basketball, lacrosse and baseball not far behind. With top ranked teams comes jocks.

1)Key is DC's Georgetown Day without GDS rigor
2) Severn is St. Albans gone coed with the same issues of class and race; Annapolis's moneyed set
3) St. Mary's: think jocks, Naval Academy-bound, Eastport rich Catholics
4) Spalding: less money than St. M's, but no jocks, demanding academics, Severn attitude---pride themselves on being "smarter" than St. Mary's and Key
5) Annapolis High: truly great college placement for a public school/IB, Visual Arts Program, and known for Chinese Language Program.
6) Severna Park is Bethesda Chevy Chase
7) Broadneck: I won't repeat. Not kind.
8) South River: STEM, but not even remotely close to Thomas Jefferson. Still finding their way and a few safety issues.
9) Crofton: the brand new high school in a nice, affordable area. One of last affordable in AA. Great ratings so far. None of the social issues of other schools. A on Niche. Get in before it spoils.
10) Chesapeake Point Science Academy: only strong charter.

lol - my kid goes to one of the schools on this list, and it feels pretty right.

Only quibbles:
I'm not sure what your beef with Broadneck is. It's as good academically as Severna Park but a whole lot more down to earth and with less racism.

And Spalding definitely has a great athletic program, but agree they see themselves as smarter (and generally kinder/less snotty) than St Mary's.

I’m in Broadneck’s district and curious what you don’t want to repeat? From what I’ve heard it’s a pretty decent high school, but also my kid is 4.

Stay away from Severn. There are far better schools in the area and surrounding.

Would it be hard socially to join Severn in 9th, coming from out of the area? Have the kids all grown up together?

Not for nothing, but one of the most shallow and unintelligent people I know is an alumna of Severn School, so now my view of that school is tainted because of her.

Could be, especially if your child is a minority and doesn’t understand Severn culture. Don’t think being WASPy from a place like Nantucket will get your child an ‘in’ either. Severn has its own culture.

I live in a neighborhood where a large portion of the adults went to Severn (and in turn send their kids there). They are the most vapid and shallow people I have ever met. What is it with that school that they produce such uninteresting humans. I went to an Ivy League college and can't imagine any of these Severn people being able to hang intellectually with that crowd.

Probably only because all they care about is sports. Not intellect.

My guess is PP’s kids are in the SP district so they are putting down Broadneck
