The lowdown on "gifts" to private schools

we can barely afford our own child's tuition, so i may be petty here by saying this but it kind of bugs me that most of the money goes to help other children pay to attend our private school while we are busting our buts to afford the tuition ourselves. selfishly i'd rather the money go to helping the school afford more musical instruments or improve the books or computers, etc...

I can sympathize, but another way to look at it is that the families receiving aid are working just as hard to come up with the share of tuition that the school expects.

It never ends. Spouse went to an oft-mentioned here school in the 80s and his parents still are encouraged to give. Letters, the magazine that shows who gave what.

This wouldn't be unusual, except the school also asks DH to cough it up twice a year too.

12:56 Not to sound petty, but I completely agree with you. When I give to the school, I am careful about how I give. The annual giving is used for teacher training, special programs (like field trips, etc.) that benefit all students. I do not tend to give at the annual spring gala, as that is 100 percent for scholarships. I imagine that sounds pretty horrible, but that's just how I feel.

My dad got kicked out of a prestigious private high school and they still ask him to give.

And he does!!
