My DD will be 14 this summer. Where can she work in DC?

15 year olds can only work in limited capacity/hours.

No one will hire a 14 year old. Try pet sitting, moving lawns, weeding or babysitting.

Really? At 14 I got paid by a camp rec center and by 15 I was working at a supermarket. I agree with the ivy poster above. It's great experience, you don't want to be an adult with these jobs for the rest of your life, but you've btdt so you're not an unrelatable asshole like so many dc adults.

Uh, no.

Why? I worked in fast food and as a checkout girl at a supermarket and went in to get two Ivy League degrees with honors. I would actually say that it taught me about the value of education so I worked that much harder in college so I could get a better job upon graduation because I saw what the lives of adults were like who held these jobs.

It has nothing to do with that, I worked fast food too. It's her age. She's too young, those places legally can't hire her.

Child labor laws vary by state. I worked in fast food at 14, and in DC 14-year-olds can legally work. Places may not want to hire 14-year-olds but it is not because they are prohibited by law. https://hr.georgetown.edu/employment-services/managers/hiringminors.html

I don't know about DC but a 14 yo absolutely can work in VA, within certain restrictions. My kid got a job the day after her 14th birthday. The paperwork was a pain but her boss really wanted to hire her.

Different era and labor laws.

-someone who has been paid for work since a paper route in 4th grade.

And how old are you?

50 something? 60?

According to Arlington, 14 year olds can no longer get work permits:

https://aec.arlingtonva.us/draft/youth-services/work-permits-youth/

But Virginia says this:

Surprisingly, dance studios are listed as places where under 16 year olds are banned from working, but dance studios often have assistants working who are as young as 13 or 14.

Not the same poster, but I worked beginning at age 14 and I am currently in my mid-30s.

Unfortunately there isn’t any current information for this year.
OP, is your dd a DC resident? This program is only for children that live in DC. The application usually opens towards the end of January so the site should be updated for 2019 soon. It's a great program with a variety of really good jobs. I have an 18-year-old who has done it every year since he became eligible and my 13-year-old is really happy that he turns 14 before the deadline so that he can get a paid job this summer.

OP, my sixteen year old worked last summer but we found that it is quite hard to get "real" jobs in DC for kids that age. She really pounded the pavement - we went into shops, ice cream places, restaurants, you name it, but it is correct that most places are reluctant to hire kids under 18. We were told as much by many employers: while there is no legal bar to hiring kids under 18, many places just said, "Sorry, our policy is we only hire 18 and over."

DD eventually found a job sweeping up hair at the salon where I get my hair cut. I just asked my stylist if they were hiring temporary summer help and she said yes and put DD in touch with the manager. She was the youngest summer staffer by several years but it was a good experience.

I'm the pp who asked if your dd is a DC resident. Just in case she is, the youth summer job program application is now open. https://webapps.does.dc.gov/OYP/OYPHome.html

I work in a dance studio and we have 13 and 14 year old assistants that are using those hours for school to get SSL hours. It is not a paid position.

14 year olds can definitely work in DC. Restrictions for sure but I hire 14 year olds. And SYEP is another good place to look.
