Besides focusing on the whole child - with much emphasis on social-emotional development - we loved the play based curriculum. This was very important for our family. Country day teaches how to be kind and self-sufficient, independent and hardworking. From teaching the magic flip to helping potty train my son, this school was part of “my village” in raising my children.

To this day, all my children get so excited when we drive by the school, and always want to stop by to play on the playgrounds. It truly is a magical place.

It seems amazing. We love the emphasis on social-emotional development. How have the children fared academically when they graduated? Do you feel it is academically strong/were they well prepared? (We are interested especially in perspectives of parents that had children who matriculated to the top private schools in the area.) Thanks for any feedback.

+1 Like to know this too!

It is preschool. Being well prepared for kindergarten really isn’t an issue.

I have heard they are not big on academics, which many people are fine with. Also that they ask for a lot of money in fundraising.

I have heard they were a feeder for some of the better privates. What has been experience with where kids have gone after Country Day?

CDS is a great school. Is it Harvard? No, it does not have to be. This is preschool OP. Your child will learn her alphabet, numbers, etc. s/he will be prepared for Kindergarten. Do not worry about this. The outdoor of the school is what sold us on it. WONDERFUL! The thought that my kids would play outside and learn outside me us sign up immediately. There are amazing teachers there, a very nice PTA, lots of very very nice parents. Head of school is a great person, serious and committed. The afternoon 3s and 4s placement is a problem, because they do not communicate very well. Also don’t go there thinking that if you go to CDS you’ll get into Potomac- lots of kids did not get to Potomac this year. You’ll not be disappointed with the quality of the time your child spends there! Good luck!

I have heard wonderful things about this school from other parents. I wish we lived close but it’s a bit too far for us.

Country Day School is a wonderful school. My DD graduated from there last year. The grounds of the school are beautiful and I love how they encourage the kids to go outside. After a lot of back and forth we decided not to send our three year old there. We are not white and Country Day is a really white upper class school. We felt really out of place and the administration puts pressure on parents to donate large sums of money. We would have loved to do that but unfortunately we could not afford to pay more than than we were paying. DD aid now in a much more diverse public school and she is happy - diverse in both income and race. Anyways just wanted to share our experience in case it was relevant to you. If not then it’s a great school
