PS the head gasket problems were only on the smaller engine. Look for a six cylinder to avoid the head gasket and timing belt.

Had a 2001 Forester and 2004 Legacy that were total pains before 100K.

Had a 2000 Outback that became a pain but not until around 150K.

As PPs have said, plenty of older models had durability issues.
