West Springfield high school has exceptional choir, orchestra and theater programs.

I do not know much (anything actually) about band, but they sound really strong too.

They have enough interest in music to offer AP music theory, which I understand many high schools do not.

They have a beautiful new music room with spacious, well appointed music classrooms.

There are a wide range of students there and opportunities both academically, and obviously artistically.

If your child intends (as much as any kid that young knows) to pursue arts in college then Ellington has strong relationships and networks. Colleges at all levels seek out Ellington kids.

It is also the most affordable option, even considering that you'd have to pay tuition.

OP here. Thank you, that is good to know. I only started looking today have called to ask for a tour, so I guess I will find out more soon, but a couple of things that I found seem bizarre to me. For example, US News, thttps://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/district-of-columbia/districts/district-of-columbia-public-schools/ellington-school-of-the-arts-4638, which seems to suggest that there are only 5 full time teachers. Which must mean that others are adjunct? And I couldn't find anything on the school website about any specific teachers. Just raises some questions in my head...

Never trust external data sources on DCPS schools. They are never correct.

McLean HS, the band program is the best in this region. They are the recipient of one of the nation's highest award that can be presented to an ensemble band program.

TJ would beg to differ.
As would many other high schools. It’s good , but not particularly outshining the others.

Strange that this article doesn’t mention that LAKE BRADDOCK also received this same award. Good for them both I guess.

DP. The article does say other schools in the county besides McLean have also received the award twice.

Right, but LB literally got it at the same time. They were both awarded.
Which is lovely, but not supporting the claim of “McLean is the best due to this award”. Just sayin’.

Not sure why you're surprised an article in the McLean Patch would focus on the McLean band. Have you checked the Burke Patch?

Anyway, there are a number of great band programs in the area. McLean's is one of them, and sounds like LB has a great program, too.

+1. TJ has been an honor band the last several years. Their marching band alwa
Hs wins a number of awards. And the have more all State instrumentalists than any high school in the state— despite being small.

They did offer AP Theory last year.

Pretty sure AP music theory has been offered at many schools since the mid 90’s. I took it back in 95. Not at TJ. I was dating a guy from TJ at the time, and he was a truly gifted musician. I always enjoyed concerts at Jefferson. They were certainly a cut above.
