Does anyone have an ADHD child and medicated late, in middle school, what doctor did you see?

Our pediatrician subscribes as well. We have to go in every 6 months for a height/weight check.

We use Dr. Doug Tebor in McLean for my 2 kids. He is excellent, and I believe his practice is accepting patients, although he requires a referral. One kid started seeing him in 7th grade, the other in 6th.

ADHD is co-morbid with anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses, especially in late adolescence. So, it was important to me that I establish my kids with someone who could see and deal with any other problems that arose. IMO, ADHD meds are too powerful to trust someone whose primary job is rashes and sore throats. YMMV.

I am a pediatrician and would not agree with your uncle. Stimulant medications are the recommended first line class for all types of ADHD.

Like prior pediatrician referenced in the thread, I start very low and titrate up slowly. The kid knows when we hit the right dose -- at this age, I look for the kid to tell me things are working and they are excited about being able to show everyone how hard they are trying.

It's rare not to be able to find a low dose stimulant that would help in this sort of situation. They are in and out of your system in the same day, so you can stop quickly if there is a side effect that bothers him.

Unfortunately, I am not available to you. But good luck. Try not to be overwhelmed -- you will get this sorted out.

PS: I did not mean that as it sounds! I meant I am not in your area and cannot comment on who is good with treating ADHD, accepting new patients, etc. But I wish you and your child well.
