paying someone to pick up my child from daycare

Just don't move out there. Just so far and the commute will kill you. Find something closer in.

I ride the bus to the Pentagon from Burke and get on the metro from there, and regularly see a few moms with their toddlers and preschoolers do the same commute. It looks like a great way to get some more time together and the kids seem to love it. And if you had to pick up your DC because of weather or illness, you’re close by.

This is the most realistic advice. My husband travels often fir consecutive weeks. I found a daycare that fit my commute. When he’s in town we alternate drop off and pick up according. It’s more work for him those days, but he does it as a courtesy for my doing it all while he’s away. It creates some balance for us. Truthfully though, Burke is far enough out, I’d wait til child is in regular school and make before/aftercare arrangements, or look for a home much closer in.

So I actually do this. They offer me 20 hours per week. I go tonthwir house at 1pm, umload dishwasher, cook dinner, pack lunches for the next day, throw a load of laundry in, pick kids up at 4, playtime, dinner, bath, mom gets home at 6.

Could you offer a similar arrangement?

Ask one of the daycare teachers is they can drive them home for an extra $25/day.

Jesus Christ these threads depress me.

A fair amount of daycares are open until 6:30. Could you make it before closing? How are you commuting and how long do you think it will take? Another idea is to find a daycare along your route (assuming you will drive) so not the full commute but still allowing you some flexibility.

Easy solution: don't move to Burke.

I would get a nanny plus preschool.

I don’t know if OP could afford that since she seems to want to move to Burke.

It is not so easy to find a part timer with very few hours. I tried to find someone reliable for years. I eventually stopped working because public kindergarten was awful for working parents. So many daytime parties, events at like 2:30, teacher work days, snow days, 2 hr delays. This world is not made for working moms. You need to get a good nanny for a mom substitute.

This is what we do and we LOVE it. We have a college student who has worked for us for over a year. She picks up DDs at 4:00 then stays through the beginning of bed time (6:30). While we eat, she washes all the bottles and pump parts then cleans up dinner while DH and I start bed time. When I get down from bedtime, everything is clean and tidy.

It's by far the best money we spend and even with two in daycare + her time it doesn't equal the cost of a nanny (we don't live in DC anymore and daycare is cheaper here. I think in DC this set up might end up costing you as much as a full time nanny).

Finding someone reliable, a safe driver and with an irregular schedule for such a short stint will be impossible. I would not rely on such a solution for the long term. And what happens when she is in elementary/middle school and needs to be shuttled to actvities with schedules that change every quarter? Better for the parents to work closer to home.

The problem with DC is that it is very difficult to find someone good to do this job for 3 hours a day.
