I have a high risk child also, and our experience with Tamiflu has been positive. Child went to medical summer camp (for kids too medically compromised to go to regular camp) and we were required to send along a filled but unmixed prescription for Tamiflu. When another child at camp got swine flu, our child was given the Tamiflu prophylactically, which is once per day for ten days.
Fast forward to this fall. Pediatrician was willing to write a prescription for Tamiflu for me to keep on hand, unmixed. When child got flu last week (we assume - he spiked fever of 101 at school and started coughing, and a third of his grade was out sick at the time), I called pediatrician and they didn't even ask us to come in. They said to start the Tamiflu immediately. Child woke up second day feeling fine - no fever, no cough. Dose is twice a day if you actually have flu. |
