I agree wit PP about Metformin, I have PCOS and began ovulating on my own within 2 months of starting the medication

I have a beautiful 2 year old thanks to Shady Grove. I too am a PCOS Gal and it is a tough thing
to deal with all the time. People have no idea....ignore the age old myth of being skinny if carbs go bye bye! I was working out 5 days a week and eating like a freakin bird....maybe to lose 1/2 pd. a week. It's just our issue and people that don't have it don't get it!

OP here...Thanks 16:31! Nice to hear that Shady Grove worked out for you If you don't mind me asking, what medication protocol/procedure did they put you on for your PCOS?
Seems like a lot of people really feel metformin has worked for them. I just did completed my first IUI and am 8 dpo....and of course, the wait is killing me. They gave me 50 mg of Clomid...then 100 mg in the same cycle when the 50 mg wasn't producing results. I than had a hcg trigger shot of Ovidrel and the IUI two days later. |
| I have PCOS and am also very frustrated that Shady Grove is reluctant to prescribe Metformin. I am on my fourth cycle of Clomid (1st one at 50mg didn't work, then did 2 at 100mg with timed intercourse, will do IUI with this one) -- and I finally pushed enough that they've agreed to prescribe Metformin once I get some additional blood tests. Everyone else I talk to (including an RE at another center) is very surprised that I wasn't given Metformin months ago. |

Hey PP: Did Shady Grove give you a rationale as to why they were so reluctant to prescribe Metformin? I figured
I'd give the Clomid another round or two before I start pestering them about Metformin.... |
I got a consult at SH and never went back. My opinion is that they make more $ with IUIs, IVF, etc. Be aware that taking metformin is not only important for conception, but it is now recommended to take it during the first trimester of miscarriage. Women with PCOS have a much higher risk of miscarriage and taking metformin reduces the risk significantly. |
| Wow, I just have to post because I am shocked. SG doesn't support/try metformin before doing other things?! For PCOS? In 2009, almost 2010?! That is shocking. Please, anyone with PCOS and TTC, you must take metformin! Not just for TTC but for your own health--to reduce risk of type II diabetes, heart disease, etc. And for TTC--my god, it is KEY. Some women may well need additional treatments, but for many, metformin is enough if there aren't other factors! |
| I took metformin for several months and it did not help me. I still needed to do an IUI (but I was still on it) to get pregnant. |
| Why doesn't SG use Metformin? |
