Relatively inexpensive, progressive, nurturing private

What about Montessori?

Do they have all the bells and whistles of the big schools discussed here? No. But they do offer the small, caring classes I want for my son. FWIW, some of the religious schools, while not necessarily progressive, aren't hard-core homework-oriented either. Christ Episcopal in Rockville, for example, doesn't really believe in much homework through the 3rd grade or so. Instead, it focuses on having a challenging day. After school is more for down time. Will this type of environment fit your child's needs? I don't know. But I did want to let you know there are less-expensive private school options out there.

What other schools did you find in that price range?

I echo that request - what other schools in that price range?

Oneness Family School. Bethesda. Academics are taken seriously, but very kind staff.

OP here, I don't have issues with Montessori, but they are not any less expensive.

She routinely has 1-1.5 hours of homework a night. Some of it is dawdling, but it is because she is 8 and she is TIRED!!! She does almost no outside activities, so it's not like we have something going on every night.

We never thought we'd need private school, had always planned on public school, so never planned financially for it. I am a federal employee (not high level) and DH has a consulting business, so his income is irregular and uncertain. Maybe we would qualify for FA, but I don't feel like we would get it. Our total HHI is a little less than $200K, but because of the nature of DH's business, we are loathe to spend $20K+ for private school tuition. We are just pulling ourselves out of a financial hole because he was laid off 18 months ago while I was still a SAHM. Now we are both working, but are gunshy about spending too much. But DD is breaking our heart.

I am also curious about the other options a PP mentioned.

They aren't close in, other than Oneness. But Butler goes through 8th (Montessori, Germantown), Seneca Academy, Barnesville, Christ Episcopal, and Oneness are the ones I've looked at for K-8. And Friends Community School in College Park. Again, not in the league of the big schools, but quite suitable for those looking for smaller private schools.

Some of the parents on the FCAG Yahoo group swear by Edlin (www.edlinschool.com). You may want to check that school out. (It was not a good fit for our 3rd grade FCPS GT student.)

What about Reston Day School or Chesterbrook Academy? I think they're less expensive and both go through 8th grade (I think).

And Pinecrest is a great option!

Good suggestion, but their tuition is similar to Burgundy's. Edlin's tuition is comparable, too, I believe.

OP here. Chesterbrook stops at 3rd grade. I thought Green Hedges was $20Kish? So is Edlin.

I had never heard of the Reston Day School. It is out of the way for us, but could be doable. Anyone know anything about it?

I don't know anything about VA schools, OP. I'm the one who's posted about MoCo schools. But I just wanted to say don't rule out Catholic schools. I have Jewish friends whose son wasn't doing well in public school and they sent him to a Catholic middle and high school. They considered the religion instruction to be more like a history lesson. It's not ideal, but the trade-off was smaller classes, more individualized attention, and a smaller group of friends in which he really thrived. Episcopal churches, from what I've seen, have no religion classes, but generally have chapel daily or weekly. They are, however, more expensive.

Sorry, OP. I posted Green Hedges. Thought is was less than Burgundy (which my kid loves- she's bright & likes to be engaged not just "listen passively & crank out papers" so you have my sympathy - we're planning on public for HS though). I spent some time looking through Green Hedges' website, and didn't turn up any tuition info. A friend with a kid there gasped at Burgundy's cost, so I thought it was less....

I thought I had found Green Hedges' tuition before, but now I can't. I would love to be mistaken...it is very close to us.
