Essential Nursery Items

we stock up on grocery bags and tie the diapers in it before disposing. no smell at home.

A small table or night stand next to the rocker, with a 15W bulb in it. That way, you can see but it's not too bright to keep baby up. I also keep a bottle of water on the table.

My list also includes a baby monitor, but that depends more on the size of your space, I suppose.

A note on monitors or if you're registering. We never had a sound monitor because we lived in a small space so I could hear everything anyway, though I'll probably get a sound monitor for #2 as we're now in a house with a yard and I'd like to be able to play outside with #1 while the baby sleeps.

But we eventually got a video monitor and I absolutely LOVE it. It has been great for dealing with sleep issue as my DD gets older, as it really helps us assess the situation when she cries out (i.e. if she was still lying down in her crib she was probably going back to sleep on her own, but once she was standing it was just going to escalate so we would go right in.) She's now 23 months old and I STILL use it all the time - has been especially valuable this last week as she moved into a toddler bed.

Someone earlier mentioned a small table next to the rocker. I had a little folding stool as my table where I could keep my glass of water/water bottle, a rag for burping (we used cloth diapers) and it served as a place to set my Itzbeen timer. Love that gadget. Our baby wanted things like clockwork so with the timer we knew how long we had before she's wake up, want to be nursed, would have a dirty diaper, would need more medicine, etc. Plus it has a flashlight which helped me navigate up and down the stairs in without turning on the hallway light.

Re: wipes warmer. I just wadded up the wipes in my hand and my body heat warmed them up enough to not startle the baby with a cold wipe. We also have a step trash can which is nice so you don't have to touch anything.
