Can't get an epidural - any guidance on use of IV or narcotic pain medications

Anonymous
Just wanted to let others out there know that I was able to do a phone consult with one of the anesthesiologists at Fairfax before I delivered there. I think I found the number for the labor and delivery unit online. I first spoke with the nurse manager and she put me in touch with one of the anesthesiologists. I did this because I have allergies to certain medications and had been advised by another anesthesiologist (for another procedure) that I should discuss my options before going into labor.

I had Stadol during my first labor, it was eventually followed up by an epidural. The Stadol was an injection and they didn't want me out of bed after it was given to me. It made me dizzy, but relaxed. They only give it earlier on in labor so that the baby is not born with loads of it in their system. Labor gets much harder at the end. Because they can't administer it when you REALLY feel like you need it, it is not the best option for relief.

I went natural with my second and it was a better experience. If you are considering going natural. you need to have some coping methods to use. Deep breathing works wonders.
