I think it's fine, but the problem is that our current culture of over-the-top political correctness has a way of brutally attacking even the most innocent gestures. Two young female business owners in California tried to open a taco business, and their lives were threatened repeatedly, they were vilified on social media, all in the name of "cultural sensitivity."
It's a sad world we live in, but you can't be too careful these days. |

It's fine.
A kid was one in my son's class last year and no one even blinked. I agree it's sad that this is a question. But I get it OP. |
Another Japanese here. I agree. A sumo wrestler is a funny costume. |
| So nothing on this potentially being offensive to fat people? Who speaks for them? |
Haha! So true. They're like people who do crossfit and eat a keto diet. |
Yes, and it is people like this who will get Trump re elected out of spite. |
| Fine, just no body slamming people. |
| Well he can always be a pumpkin! Nothing is safe anymore. |
| OP, maybe you are hesitating because he's not wearing this out of the spirit of admiring the sport or the people who practice it, but because he seems to be poking fun? All concerns about cultural appropriation aside, I'd be concerned if I thought my kid wanted a *mean* halloween costume. |

Go with your gut feeling. If you have to ask then it might not be a good idea.

I would give extra candy to one of those roly poly sumo wrestler costumes and say Gambatte ne!
Great costume. Why are you second guessing it? Or was he going to wear a real thong plus sacred belt? |

| Agree that I’d let my kid wear one. |
| Just don't wear it in Tokyo. Particularly in the subway during rush hour. |
| Let go of cancel culture and let kids do funny stuff again. Lighten up people |
