Therapists are SO expensive, need advice!

OP, you should contact Catholic Charities. They have a sliding scale and excellent therapists. You do not need to be Catholic.

You get a series of books out of the local library, read up, implement and share with your child as appropriate.

This is what I ended up doing with my social anxiety and my daughter's, as well as all other problems in our family's life for which a therapist would have been indicated. Therapists, in my experience, are just a big waste of money.

Were there any specific books you found to be very helpful?

We used a therapist in training too. Our insurance has good out of network benefits, but they were willing to come to our house, which was important at the time. Excellent experience. And $90 a visit ($110 for a home visit) which usually needed up lasting 90 minutes when talking to DD and us.

Also, for social anxiety, how about a weekly social skills group, supplemented by one individual visit every month or six weeks? That would bring the price down a lot.

In Fairfax, I know Joe Kabush practices adolescent psychology supervises 2-3 therapists in training at any given time— often male therapists, which can be great for a boy. His practice also a number of different therapy groups.

NIH has clinical trials that may be a match for getting some treatment.

DC is enrolled in an anxiety clinic at Children’s Hospital, covered by our insurance - BCBS. Appointments are limited but we got lucky, maybe because we had a referral from another Children’s physician.

Social skills group therapy (much less $$$)

If I had to pay $200 a visit to a therapist, my anxiety would magically disappear.

There is a gwu institute that charges a sliding scale based on ability to pay and they are great!

Try asking your pediatrician for recommendations.

Where is OP again? I would recommend one, but honestly I am from Europe, but would have to ask her first. I never give phone numbers or in this case name without permission. But, she is God send to my kids. If you are BCBS, look at their directory, it takes a while to find a good fit. BTW, Georgetown psychiatrist worked with my DS, she was awful! We kept asking for a psychologist and she said she is good with it therapy too. Not, not at all, told my kids that he is a sick pervert and that Prozac is not making him lose his inhibitions(it was) but that it is showing him his true perverted personality! He was 11! And not a pervert at all, nor now, nor ever! Just started puberty and Prozac helped him talk about it more!

I think you need to find a way to pay for it. Credit whatever....
This isn't some luxury for your kid.
Is there a dad in the picture?

While I'm not a huge fan of Dr. Phil, he & his son created an app called "Doctor on Demand" & you can Skype/ Facetime with every type & variety of doctors, including children's therapy.
They can prescribe medication too (not schedule 2, of course)

The first session is free, not sure after that but I know that it's much more affordable than the stereotypical doctors, however all of the doctors are licensed, bonded & very professional.

This could be a great alternative & it's done right from home!

The social anxiety/skills groups are not less expensive. In fact, most of them are more expensive bc you also have to pay for parent therapy too.
