Merit aid

op here-thank you for all the responses. We definitely do not want to acquire a lot of debt for my son, especially since he has two other siblings going to college right behind him. I think that he will do better at a small(er) school but we could not swing it without a lot of aid. He is an amazing kid but school is not easy for him. He does take all honors/AP classes but he has to work for his 3.5-UW. We recently moved to MA and the competition here is insane. I just want to be realistic about whether we will get anything. I don't want to even encourage him to visit/apply if we won't be able to send him to a small private college. He loves biology so the end goal is either medical school or maybe a MPH.

I dont' know if smaller is the only way to go.

YOu may want to go with the most affordable option, and give him the flexibility to take 4.5 or 5 years to finish.

You posted here before, pretty recently, and got the same advice.

A lot of the merit grants people are talking about aren't that big. My kid "got merit aid" from Boulder - $10k over 4 years, which isn't close to enough to make a difference. (He is a better student than your kid - he also got into their honors college).

None of the schools listed in the previous post are going to take him, even at full-fees.

Boulder is terrible with merit aid.

Yes, but the point is, when people talk about merit aid, often they arent bragging about all that much.

When people talk about merit aid, they are not bragging at all. They are figuring out how to pay for college.
