Pope says it is unfair to apply contemporary standards to sex abuse cover ups.

Ugh, he needs to go.

How can you justify your bigotry, which is shizz squared?

/ not Catholic

Questioning the integrity of people who support an organization that has for decades facilitated the abuse of children doesn't really qualify as bigotry. Abuse of children isn't really a difference of opinion unless you are unwell.

Yep. Sadly my grandma told me once it just used to be what men did to little girls. I didn't want to hear any more and try not to think about the horror of her statement.

This is literally one of the most disturbing things I've heard in my entire life.

But yeah, the Pope needs to stop making statements about the sex abuse scandals because this is ongoing and constant. I'm disgusted by how they treat current cases.

There was a time when slavery was common and socially acceptable. When was the time in contemporary history that it was ever socially acceptable to sexually abuse children? I get not making a big public deal about it but they could have removed them. They knew it was wrong because they kept it secret. They knew it was wrong because they moved them. THEY KNEW IT WAS WRONG!!!

Hwhat?! True about slavery, and true that the owner could do anything to slaves because they owned them. That INCLUDEs sexual abuse of any of them, torturing and killing. And it was socially acceptable.

But then, as now, slavery was morally wrong - something that many people did realize at the time . A church should know the difference between morality and social acceptability.

What an ass. He's got to retire or Catholicism will die. Perhaps that's his goal.

Just another powerful white man making excuses for abuse and abuse cover up. There is only one right thing to say (and do). "We were horrible people who committed or covered up the most horrific crimes known to man. We will turn anyone who committed such crimes or covered them up into the police. We will fire and publicly shame anyone who committed or covered up such crimes. We will pay enormous amounts of money in restitution the victims even at the risk of the church going bankrupt and having to shut down". Period. That is the ONLY morally right thing to do.

+1. As Catholics here have explained many times, they have some compelling reasons for staying, like working for change from within.

/ also not Catholic

It was always wrong but it was also considered wrong to talk about sex and that kind of scandalous thing. I think that is what he is saying. The urge to sweep it under the rug 20+ years ago shouldn't be condemned now by modern people.

Going forward, or even dealing with cases in the last 10 years, of course standards are different.

Does staying and working for change from withing include the collection plate?

Go to mass, but hold your money, change will happen with lightning speed. Drop that dollar and you are part of the problem, with zero wiggle room.

Maybe Grandma was wrong and it wasn't commonplace, except sadly, in Grandma's world, and she thought it was like that for everyone.

You’ve been pushing this for months. Catholics have told you why you’re wrong many times. Not going to bother repeating the arguments here—do the work yourself and go back and re-read the old threads where you were peddling this before.

I agree -- don't bother re-posting arguments that were 100% ineffective the first time.

And this is the most progressive Pope we've ever had, just take a moment to think about that.

This is why I'm not Catholic.

Child sex abuse was illegal back then and illegal now.
