No advice here- just saying I love this thread. Musical theater is my DDs happy place and I hope she still does it as a grown up.

Long-winded PP again.
Here's another good reference. I often use this site to get some good ideas of the synopsis, characters, ranges, etc. https://stageagent.com/shows/musical/6658/heathers-the-musical If you click on the characters tab, you'll get a general idea of the range, but if you click on the individual character's names, you'll get the actual ranges the characters need to sing. The character of Natalie in Next to Normal has a couple of good duets that would work. Next to Normal seems to be musically similar and Natalie is also a teenager with some of the same teenage angst. You can take her part out for 32 bars. Songs like "Maybe" or "Wish I Were Here". You can find soundtrack tracks on Youtube (put in the show and song title). And I usually follow along with lyrics on a site like https://www.stlyrics.com/. |
Ok I’m the op and the audition is a few days away. I found the song Superboy and the Invisible Girl from Next to Normal and Pulled from The Addams Family. I “performed” both for DH who has no real knowledge of theatre things but an appreciation. He said my voice stands out more in the former but the latter is way more magnetic because I could work a little choreography in and it was just more fun. The play for which I’m auditioning is serious but also satire—so do I pick the serious song that’s a bit easier to sing or the fun one that’s easier to “get into” acting-wise? This would be so much easier if I could just sing The Sound of Music.

Are you a mezzo-soprano or a soprano? You can't be both. Good singers have wide ranges, but you will have more vibratto when singing either the higher or lower notes. Is your regular speaking voice high or low?
OP, make sure your sheet music for the accompanist is in the correct key for you and that you practice with it.
I’d say I’m a second soprano. It’s above mezzo but below super high soprano. Also, I’ve found Pulle on a lot of “Overdone” lists. There are literally zero soprano rock songs so I’m trying to find higher register mezzo stuff.
