The other bit of advice is to start really early. If your child is considering playing a college sport then they are probably very dedicated to training and it will be very difficult to find windows of opportunity to visit colleges. You need to do that early -- rule out schools that your kids doesn't like and figure out the type of school they want to attend.
And make sure that you know academically what schools match your child. Coaches have some pull, but you need to be in the range. Unless you are the top of the top.
Lastly, make sure your kid likes the school in addition to being able to play a sport.
