Idiot?? Seriously??? Yes, only idiots would be concerned about children dying. |
ITA and what cracks my shit up is how the anti-vaxers think they know more than the CDC. I know the CDC isn't perfect, but those people know what they're doing. And no, they haven't been bought up by Big Pharma. |
No, it's not 1 %. It's WAY LESS than one percent. One percent of those who get it get hospitalized. Of that one percent, a small percentage need to be in intensive care. Of those (a small percentage of the original 1 percent who needed to be hospitalized), a very small percent -- oh never mind, it's been posted all over this board in various threads but if you prefer to believe it's a serious risk, then enjoy. |
Am I an idiot because the number is wrong, or because that many coffins is OK to you? Which way am I wrong. I will debate either at your request. Be prepared if you pick the numbers question. |
| Hmmmm, I didn't see anywhere that this pig flu is psychosomatic. |
Because our arguments are so superior to "would you shut up already" maybe? |
Currently, of the hospitalized cases, 25% go to the ICU, and 28% of those patients (or 7% of the hospitalized cases) die. It's not as as mall as you are portraying. In the end, 30,000 to 90,000 people will die from H1N1. That's .01% to .03% of the population of the United States. That number is small, but we do care a lot about 40,000 people dying in car accidents each year, or 70,000 people dying from diabetes each year. |
That can't be it. Especially when one of the anti-vax mom's told me that my having the swine flu was a figment of my immagination. |
|
I know Einstein flunked math and all that, but when you say "of the hospitalized cases" YOU ARE REFERRING TO ONE PERCENT (1%) OF THE PEOPLE WHO GET THE FLU. You read right, ONE PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO GET THE FLU END UP IN THE HOSPITAL. Of that one percent, even less go to the ICU. And of those 'even less than 1 percent', even LESS die. Therefore, those who die are LESS (way less) than one percent of those who get the flu.....hellllloooooo.... |
|
To the Einstein flunked math poster, not the poster you quoted but:
This from an article I just pulled from the AP: "Eleven more children were reported to have died of flu in a single week, with 10 of the pediatric deaths confirmed by laboratory tests as being from H1N1 flu, Anne Schuchat, a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told reporters. Since April, when the swine flu outbreak began in Mexico, 86 children in the United States have died of the new strain of H1N1, Schuchat said." I am sure that 11 sets of parents out there from last week, plus the 75 more from weeks prior, don't really give a shit about your 0.1% of 0.1%. Why you don't tell them the odds? Kids are dying of a something I can protect my child from. Not prevent, not guarantee, but at least do something to reduce the odds. Why do you insist on berating and condescending parents like me? 86 children have died. I doubt very seriously their families think this is no big deal. Do whatever the fuck you want, but if you are so confident in your decision or your odds, why bother getting defensive? I'm defensive, personally, because I'm completely humbled and scared. I know the odds. But I'm a mom. It's my kid. Rational numbers sorta fly out the window. And I won't apologize for it. Less than 0.1% of kids in my kids' situation (full term, mom received prenatal care, nonsmoking house etc.) die of SIDS every year. Yet I bet most moms on this board checked their infants' breath a few nights that first year. |
I don't agree with your position, and I am smart, and I am articulating my position (w/o resorting to telling you to fuck off). Why are you debating this if you have to say "do whatever the fuck you want"? If you feel that way, then stop engaging in debate, because I made the assumption that since someone was participating, that meant they gave a shit what the other side thought. If you don't, then why don't you do us all a favor and just butt out of the dialogue? I'm sure life would be a lot better for you if you could just dominate those around you into submission but life with other adults just isn't like that, is it. |
| To those who don't want to get the vaccine, fine, it's your choice. However, please stay home if/when you get the flu to minimize the number of people you expose. Personally, I think 86 deaths in young children is horrible. We're not even at the peak of flu season. 1% is not insignificant considering we are 5 billion people on the planet. With medical decisions, you weigh the risks and benefits. The benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks of the disease. |

I did not, ever, say fuck off. I said do whatever the fuck you want.
I'm just sick of the condescending attitude toward those of us who are concerned about the flu, and think, for one minute, that our child have have a serious complication or worse. It IS possible. If not probable, possible. And I'm sticking up for myself and that's all. I got a little passionate because I'm sick of people on this board acting like I am crazy for being concerned. I'm actually a pretty rational person in real life. I'm incredibly educated about this strain of flu, and being in public health, have probably listened in on 2 dozen CDC calls for health professionals this fall alone. Yet, I'm a mom. So I'm allowed to ignore the odds and worry. I am not going around message boards posting crazy stuff about the end of the world, but I feel like any rational discussion on these H1N1 threads get sidetracked by this vaccine debate - of people telling the parents who are interested in getting the vaccine they are being irrational, not paying attention to the numbers, are "sheep" following the herd. It's ridiculous. |
Excuse me, but you are the math impaired one. As you can see, my final numbers on the mortality of H1N1 agree with your first statement. I took issue with your statement that a small percentage of the hospitalized patients make it to the ICU, and that a small percentage of ICU patients died. Those percentages (25% and 28% respectively) are very high for hospital admissions. If you feel that the final mortality numbers are off, please provide your calculations. |
