I am pregnant and my son got the mist. Everything I read said it was fine. I actually had him get the mist over the shot because the mist is preservatives free. It has been two days but we both are fine as of now.
I don't think there is any concern. |

We got all H1N1 yesterday. Kids got the mist I got the shot (35 weeks along).

The influenza virus strains in FluMist are (a) cold-adapted (ca) (i.e., they replicate efficiently
at 25°C, a temperature that is restrictive for replication of many wild-type influenza viruses); (b) temperature-sensitive (ts) (i.e., they are restricted in replication at 37°C (Type B strains) or 39°C (Type A strains), temperatures at which many wild-type influenza viruses grow efficiently); and (c) attenuated (att) (they do not produce classic influenza-like illness in the ferret model of human influenza infection). So, more simply..They grow in cold, they don't in warmth, they are weak..they don't survive well inside a person. FluMist contains live attenuated influenza viruses that must infect and replicate in cells lining the nasopharynx of the recipient to induce immunity. Vaccine viruses capable of infection and replication can be cultured from nasal secretions obtained from vaccine recipients. Yes it is transmittable. At least one vaccine strain was isolated from 80% of FluMist recipients; strains were recovered from 1-21 days post vaccination (mean duration of 7.6 days ± 3.4 days). The cold-adapted (ca) and temperature-sensitive (ts) phenotypes were preserved in 135 tested of 250 strains isolated at the local laboratory. Ten influenza isolates (9 influenza A, 1 influenza B) were cultured from a total of seven placebo subjects. One placebo subject had mild symptomatic Type B virus infection confirmed as a transmitted vaccine virus by a FluMist recipient in the same playgroup. This Type B isolate retained the ca, ts, and att phenotypes of the vaccine strain, and had the same genetic sequence when compared to a Type B virus cultured from a vaccine recipient within the same playgroup. Four of the influenza Type A isolates were confirmed as wild-type A/Panama (H3N2). The remaining isolates could not be further characterized. Assuming a single transmission event (isolation of the Type B vaccine strain), the probability of a young child acquiring vaccine virus following close contact with a single FluMist vaccinee in this daycare setting was 0.58% (95% CI: 0, 1.7) based on the Reed-Frost model. With documented transmission of one Type B in one placebo subject and possible transmission of Type A viruses in four placebo subjects, the probability of acquiring a transmitted vaccine virus was estimated to be 2.4% (95% CI: 0.13, 4.6), using the Reed-Frost model. The transmission rate can be up to 2.4% Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with FluMist. It is not known whether FluMist can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity. FluMist should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. There was a rat study done with no significant deviation from the norm, but it is not a complete study. So, its not recommended for pregnant women. I hope this help a bit more than anecdotal answers |
| I am 32 weeks pregnant, a Doctor of Pharmacy, and just asked this question of a H1N1 expert during an educational program last week. It is perfectly safe for your child to get the H1N1 flu mist vaccine if you are pregnant (although you should not get it) because it does not "shed" and cannot be transmitted post-administration. My DS received the mist over a week ago and I am anxiously awaiting to get my shot on Monday since I haven't had any luck at the clinics - I have had no concerns with him having the mist while I was not immunized. |

im 27 weeks along. I got my vaccine on the 28th of october and my daughter got flumist on the 30th. I came down with sore throat, fever, congestion last monday.(Thats 12 days after my vaccination, 10 after my daughters) I've been in bed ever since. I went to the ER and asked for a rapid strep test and h1n1 test. both came back negative. the er doctor told me that the h1n1 test is 'pretty 50 50'. He also said that it's very possible I have the h1n1 virus. By the way, I'd try and avoid getting that h1n1 test done. gathering that culture is pretty uncomftorble. Anyway, I think yes, it is possible to get the h1n1 virus from someone whos had flumist. I hear it's unlikely but here I am, wondering. I've also heard that if you receive the vaccine and still end up getting the virus you wont come down with it so harshly. So if I do have h1n1 I have to say the symptoms are pretty mild. uncomftorble, but mild. And if it is the h1n1 I dont even know if I got it from my daughter. If it's not the h1n1 virus then I dont know why my daughter hasnt' come down with any of these symptoms.

| All due respect to 14:47, it seems highly unlikely that you got H1N1 from your daughter 10 days after she received the Flumist. For one thing, most viruses become symptomatic 2-4 days after you're exposed. For another, the CDC says the FluMist is only even theoretically a problem when a recipient is exposed to someone with an extraordinarily comprimised immune system, like a cancer patient undergoing immuno-suppressive therapy. Just the fact that you both got the vaccine and then 10-12 days later you have some nonspecific symptoms... that just doesn't tell you much. |
| Above is responding to 17:47, sorry for the typo. |
You shouldn't be worried if you just found out you're pregnant. The real concern is for women in their 3rd trimester. |
| My son got the H1N1 mist while sitting on my lap, and we have been in very close contact since. But I had already gotten my H1N1 vac almost 3 weeks prior. |
| PP here: forgot to clarify that I am currently 29 weeks pregnant. |
| Son got H1N1 mist while sitting my my lap same day I got the shot. Over two weeks ago and neither of us have gotten sick. I am 7 weeks. My OBGYN said it was fine. |

relax, I insisted that my 4 old daughter and husband gets the h1n1 flu mist, even though I'm 8 month pregnant. 5 days later I was in bed with body ache and 39, 4 C fever. i got plenty of rest, vitamin C, sweating therapie and I was fine fine within days. My obgn says, that I had probably swine flu.
It didn't feel other than a regular flu. PS: I will not get the h1n1 vaccination for myself, there is not singel study on the affects to the baby. |
| Can a H1n1mist be followed by a h1n1 injection as booster? |
