That was the whole point? Different mulch for different purposes. I like gardening, not weeding so a one-time effort at the start of the season keeps things much easier.

again in the garden 6" of straw would not be odd and is normal but if you dumped 6" of hardwood/tree chip mulch on your shrub beds or around your vegetable plants or around your trees. you are not doing you plants any favors.
