Books for emerging readers

I'll second Geronimo Stilton, Magic Treehouse and My Father's Dragon (though I think this one is a great story for dad to read to/with son).

I definitely recommend the library for series type books, because once your child's reading progresses, they will not want to go back and reread these books. But the classic picture books are revisited many, many times because they are much richer in terms of story, pictures, and text. So they are worth buying and will be cherished for a lifetime ... passed on to grandchildren.

Please recommend the classic picture books appreciated by 6 and 7 year olds. Thank you!

My daughter has been reading the Tim Egan books-with Dodsworth, Hodges and the duck. Some are picture books, some are chapter books.
