- Maybe they have zero faith that the current principal will stay longer than a year?
- Maybe they’ve been watching the absolute sh*t show that it has been for the last 5 years and don’t want their child to be yet another Guinea pig in the latest attempt to fix it?
- Maybe every other kid on the block has gone to Maury or MVCS and they want to be part of the community?

My kids won’t be going there, that’s for damn sure. We’ll go private before we subject our daughters to that place.

You've wasted so much time writing this post. These are not reasons to grant a transfer. We get that people don't want to go there, but again, these are not reasons the SB will let you transfer now.

You forgot

Well what do you suggest to those of us who can't afford private? We are trying to move but the real estate market has been crazy.

I agree....I'm PP and I am curious as to the reasons that OP gave which actually granted a transfer.

Just curious though....is the crossing guard thing true?

I mean didn't everyone know what school they were zoned for when they bought?

Yes, it is. I pass the intersection twice a day and there is no guard there during walking-to-school hours.

Is there a light or is it a crosswalk where cars are supposed to stop but rarely do?

Curious about the impact of the school not being accredited- what happens if you move to a different school district with a transcript from an unaccredited school? Do you have to test into a specific grade?

The latter. There is no light. Don't any of you use Braddock Rd Metro? Wait until a kid is struck and killed- then watch the resulting lawsuits.

"Uhh, did anyone think it was a problem having 40 kindergartners running in front of a major commuter station with 300 bus trips per day?"

So your concern is that people are sending their 7 year olds to walk to JH alone without an adult? Because why else would you need a crossing guard? There's a traffic light on Mt. Vernon avenue, cross there if you are coming from Del Ray. If you are not coming from Del Ray, the bus center should have little to no effect on your walk, because you don't have to go past it. Walk down West St or another street and cross over to the JH side away from the bus center.

Of the 12k elementary school kids, only 400+ were affected by redistricting. There is waaaaaaaay too much complaining on this board to be from this small percentage of families. Come on....a lot of people complaining here bought houses in JH and assumed they could get a waiver into Maury as waivers used to be easily obtained. Now they are pissed. They bought nicer houses in the bad school district and now it's a problem. Whatever.....

But school hasn't started yet - why would their be a crossing guard during summer break? Wait until Sept. 4th.

Well what do you suggest to those of us who can't afford private? We are trying to move but the real estate market has been crazy.

This line of logic floors me.

Recognize the freight train headed your way and manage it, like a grown up. If you can afford to live in the south part of Del Ray or some other "desirable" area that zones to J-H, you can figure out something. Make choices. Rent a freaking TH if you have to. Plenty of other people have managed to sort it out. You are not entitled to go to any public school you like. You are entitled to go to the one you are zoned to, which in this case hasn't changed in many years. But in general, boundaries can change and you might not like that either. There is no community compact ANYWHERE that says boundaries will never change. They will change and they do. So my advice is buy or rent property in a school system where you can live with several outcomes and you're comfortable with schools overall.

Does ACPS do home checks to make sure you're actually living in the rented TH? Or can you just rent and pay for a TH?

I have no idea, but the idea is sell your home and live in a rented place if you are having trouble buying somewhere else. It's not as if homes in that part of Alexandria have any trouble selling.

However, if you can pay a mortgage and pay rent on a TH, then pay for private school.
