USE VINEGAR

I've used ammonia to get smells out of towels. I never measured, just added some to the wash. I may try vinegar though....

vinegar works. is also great for washing sports bras.

oh and yes, first wash just with vinegar and then a second time with regular soap.

I always put vinegar in the softener dispenser when washing towels. The vinegar in the rinse cycle helps wash out the detergent residue, as well. It kills any smells and keeps the towels soft. Sometimes you get a whiff of vinegar when you open the washer door (but just a little), but the smell does not survive the dryer.

Vinegar kills mildew in dive suits at a pretty low concentration. I imagine that you might need a higher concentration or a longer soak time for towels.

Bleach kills mildew.

Hot water kills mildew but it has to be pretty hot. I think it has to stay above 115 degrees for a good part of the cycle, which is tough if your machine does not have a heater because it cooks during the wash. Mine has a sanitize setting and that works for mildew and dust mites.

I can find no data to

On the bright side, though my colored towels are now discolored, they smell great. I tried everything before going for the bleach, but it was bleach or throw the towels away, so I went for it.

This. Bleach and only buying white towels is the way to go!

Clorox and then let towels dry in sun. Then, tell your kids to hang washcloths/towels on a rack, then that will at least dry and not smell like mildew.

Vinegar and if that doesn't do the trick, Borax.
