The problem with Ellicott City is the UNBELIEVABLE traffic to get there from anywhere. 29 and side roads are a snail's pace from 3:00 to 7:00. Traveling from the middle of Columbia to the library on Route 40 for a meeting took more than 1 hour at 5:30 pm. It is normally about 15 to 20 minutes. Staying in Columbia is prudent if you are considering a commute to anywhere. |
I grew up there. I think Columbia never fully recovered from the housing crisis. 2008 was the tip of the bubble so prices were very inflated. Plus a lot of immigrants have moved into Columbia in recent years. Not trying to throw shade but a lot of them don't seem to have a high standard for their homes. Or don't have the means to make updates. My parents still live there and they complain about sellers lowballing on prices because their houses are dilapidated and they just want to offload them. |
Depends upon where because I am in an older village with pretty nice houses...most have been renovated. |
Right. You got lucky. Most people's homes do not appreciate that much in a decade. In a decade I would not expect tremendous appreciation. |
I work is Columbia and grew up in Baltimore. Agree with PPs, everyone does public schools in HoCo. Baltimore has a wide variety of excellent private schools, if that's what you want. |
My parents have lived in Ellicott City for 30 years and have been downtown maybe 5 times. Most people who live in EC never go down there. It's great, but it has no impact on your EC experience if you live there. |
We’re from baltimore, currently live in moco and are looking at Ellicott City. I think moco has appreciated bc of it’s proximity to dc and va and also some areas in moco are really walkable nice areas. We live in north Bethesda and are concerned we’ll miss the walkabity of our current neighborhood if we move to Ellicott City. |
