Which INOVA hospital is better for delivery- Fairfax or Fair Oaks

Fair Oaks Hospital all the way.

And I second the recommendation for Hodges, Zaita and Chin. Awesome practice!!!!

What type of birth do you want? Do you want an unmedicated birth? Its important to tell us what type of birth you want when you are looking for a care provider.

Anyway, I recommend Fair Oaks. Another advantage of Fair Oaks is that you will have a private room without having to pay extra for that. I delivered at Fair Oaks and thought I got great care. I also have a friend that delivered in Fairfax...she didn't want an epidural, but she wanted something to take the edge off the contractions and Fairfax refused. They said she either had to have the epidural or nothing. She stated they were very baby factory like.

I delivered at Fair Oaks and LOVED it. I had a private room, the nurses were WONDERFUL and it was smaller and more convenient to get in and out of... Fairfax is HUGE. Also, hubby thought the food was pretty decent. I'm delivering there again next summer.

I go to Greenbriar OB-gyn (off of Rt. 50 near West Ox) - two females and one male and they are wonderful.

I'm in the same boat, moving to Fairfax in 2 weeks and have set up an appt with Dr. Maser out of Fairfax Hospital. Fair Oaks is closer to where we'll be living and I'm swayed by reading the reviews on Dr. Hodges and Fair Oaks--I think I'll try and get on his schedule. My hubbie and I researched Dr. Hodges, Zaita and Shin on Healthgrades.com (all in the same group, Shin is newer). Has anyone had experiences with Dr. Jiyeon Shin?
My hubbie went to med school at Georgetown, where Dr. Hodges studied, thus I'm leaning towards switcing over.
As I'm new to the birthing experience, I have no point of comparison as a patient and both Fairfax and Fair Oaks seem like great places. It seems as though Fair Oaks is a bit more personable and would be easier to get a private room, true?

Dr. Shin is no longer with the practice from what I understand. Sad because she delivered my son last year and I loved her, but all three of them are great, with Hodges being a first choice. I would pick Fair Oaks over Fairfax any day. MUCH less chaotic. Easier to get in and out of (no fees) Food was great (you order off a room service menu) Very friendly and competent nurses. Honestly, I didn't want to go home.

I had two c-sections (not scheduled), both at Fairfax, and I had a great experience both times. I have never delivered anywhere else, so I can't compare, but the nurses at FFX were great and I have no complaints at all. I wasn't really looking for any kind of "birthing experience" though, just an uneventful one, and a healthy baby. I got one out of two - the more important one

All Fairfax rooms aren't private?

OP, I think both are good. But should something go wrong, I would want to be at Fairfax. I had a c-section there. Nurses were great, they arranged a private room for me without the additional charge. I would not dwell too much which one since you will only spend couple of days there.

Shin is at Greenbriar now - haven't seen her yet, but Pickford delivered both of my children and I love her, so I give Greenbriar two thumbs up. Both were delivered at Fair Oaks - great great great experience there. I seriously had the most lovely caring nurse while I was there for #2... loved her. I like the intimate feeling at Fair Oaks because we just pulled up, the valet takes the car, you walk in and go up a couple stops on the elevator and you're there. It just felt smaller and homier to me. Fairfax is huge, but it's a wonderful hospital. Barring no complications with your L&D, I would 100% choose Fair Oaks for the size, accommodations, food (as well as location, for me).

I have delivered babies at both, and had excellent experiences at both. My first was born at 34 weeks at Fair Oaks and spent two weeks in their NICU. She was treated very well and even though Fairfax is the place to be for very serious baby issues, Fair Oaks was fine for us. At Fairfax, I never felt like it was a baby factory. We had a great experience.

Having said all of that, I will second the recommendation of Dr. Allen. I saw Dr. Forest (the other doctor at her practice) with my second child, but I also met with her a few times as well. I was always VERY impressed with her and I just adore all the people who work with them. She saw me a few times while I was in the hospital and took care of my sons circumcision. Very professional.

If I want something relaxing and "all about me", I'll go to a spa.

If I want to give my baby the best possible chance if things go wrong, I'd go to the hospital with the top-notch NICU.

No brainer IMO.

Delivered at Fairfax and had a good experience. Great nurses, great room.

oh please. nothing like making women feel stupid for actually caring how they are treated during their births. i don't think it's too much to ask for a great NICU as well as to be treated with respect while giving birth.

Not the OP, but I don't think that wanting comfort, convenience and more relaxing and less hustle-bustle atmosphere is really "all about me"... having a stressed-out postpartum mom isn't good for anyone. Don't forget - Fair Oaks has a NICU, as well. It was a lot closer for me to go to Fair Oaks than Fairfax (my doctors delivered at Fair Oaks anyways)... never would have considered the possibility of sitting in rush hour traffic to get to Gallows Road.

because you're the only amazing mom who cares about your baby's health and the rest of us just want to go for a massage.
