My DD ('16 grad) had to take the world history SOL, but I remember getting paperwork from the school last year advising that kids could choose to just take the AP test in certain subjects (and being surprised about it!) The teacher warned them that they likely wouldn't get pass advanced. The SOL covers the FCPS World History 2 curriculum and it's not the same as the AP curriculum.
Also, students need to pass 6 SOLs to graduate and have the opportunity to take more than that, so it makes sense that they could skip some. My senior has 9 verified credits.
Depending on when they enter and if they want the standard vs. advanced diploma the # of SOLs needed varies. But, agree that it's not that hard to get the SOLs you need and skipping some should be fine for most kids. My DS is is just a sophomore and already has 6 verified credits.
