Celebrity net worth vastly overstated

Bourdain was a name that everyone knew, but very few actually watched his show. Most had seen episodes when flipping through if nothing else was on, but out of my circle of friends, only maybe 2 were fans who watched his show regularly.

He didn’t have a huge popular following. Cable TV really does not pay much unless you are a huge star which he relatively speaking was not. Cooper is a freaking Vanderbilt and much more of a household name.

Bourdain never went out of his way to commercialize his name, disdained those who did and has openly said that he only realized the importance of making money after his daughter was born. He didn't have that much time.

I read about his worth in the paper today. My husband and I were stunned at how little he had. We, by contrast, have way more than that and not celebrities with our own TV show for years, several published books, many TV appearances, etc. We also were not given any $ from our parents, grew up modest...and, still, in our mid-40s have much more net worth.

Shocked. Literally shocked.

I could see that. Unfortunately, it was too late to realize it for his daughter's sake.

I'm not really a celebrity but my net worth is always quoted on these sites and it's vastly understated not over. I'm always surprised bc my contracts are public knowledge as are my real estate transactions which seem to be the 2 easiest ways to throw out a number. I think AB partied and spent his money and why not. Can't take it with you.

Pp above. And whoever thought Anderson Cooper was a good comparison is insane. Everyone knows when you come from serious money you command equally serious money. The rich always get richer. You can never compare that to someone who starts at the bottom of his genre.

OP here - new details leaked:

We obtained a copy of Bourdain's will, and it appears he created a trust outside the will which contained an undisclosed amount of assets. It's very common for rich folk to create trusts outside of their will ... partly for tax purposes and partly for privacy.

Im sure he has a trust outside of his assets. Thats what rich people do.

Yup. Not uncommon to stash assets elsewhere. Not to mention subtract taxes and fees for the dealmakers and there isn't a lot left. Compared to us muggles sure, but not for celebs hence why some seem broke or go celebrity broke (see the johnny depp post).

I think the main problem is celebrity net worth websites just take all income and easily identified property and say that's their net worth. No deductions for taxes, agents/managers/publicists/lawyers or years of normal living expenses.

You all sound like you have too much money and not enough compassion.

Megan was not a celebrity. She was an actress few people had heard of.
