Why do wealthy people go to SE Asia ... then low-key brag about how miserable it was?

Food and lodging is super cheap.
Airline tickets not so much so I guess only "wealthy" people can afford that.

And it's relatively unique so there's the bragging right aspect.

Not really.

We may be considered wealthy. We have a 7 figure income. I don’t think we know people who low key brag. Maybe it just seems like bragging to you.

I have been to SE Asia a few times. It is scorching hot, even in December. That is a valid complaint. There are a lot of sights and amazing food. Thailand has some of the best spas in the world if you are into that. Markets can be fun. I would go more often if I didn’t have 3 young kids. My toddler just wouldn’t do well on such a long flight.

"May be considered wealthy"? Sweetie, you are wealthy. My DH and I have a combined income of $220,000 and we correctly refer to ourselves as upper-middle class in the Fairfax suburbs.

OP, I think people who complain about their vacations to SE Asia likely complain about a lot of things. It is just their way of making conversation.

WTH is a “low-key brag”? Is it like a humble-brag? OP maybe you need to get some new friends.

I think it's like a subtle brag? So it's kind of like a humble brag?

Low-key used to mean something.

Now it means that you just don’t like it. “They “low-key” called me..” “They low-key emailed me the wrong info again.” Or whatever.

She's posting from an aol.com email address and refers to herself as "chick." I think she's age 60+.

That doesn’t seem to be OP. Low key is in the subject line. And the aol poster is below that.

They want to appear worldly by going there and then need to complain about it because they are actually miserable.

+1. you don’t even have to be wealthy to really enjoy it

I've been to 40+ countries and loved travelling in SE Asia the best. You are nuts OP. Go watch a travel documentary and get a clue.

...but it was so "enlightening"? I'm confused. Is it just en vogue because going on posh Euro or Caribbean is blasé, where as slumming it is seen as more interesting? Yoga?

Where are you talking about? Do you even know? Thailand? Malaysia?, Cambodia? Vietnam? Myanmar?

Never been, so I'm not sure, but given that there are a few dozen countries with hundreds of millions of people and thousands of cities, seems like there might be a few interesting things to do and see there.

Maybe once upon a time, but as a travel destination, the region largely has been ruined by hoardes and hoardes of backpackers. A shame, and a cautionary tale for destinations around the world.

Only the low cost places, and then on a well defined trail. These days the hordes are definitely from a certain gigantic country to the north.

My SIL right now is spending a month in Thailand and Laos, alone, and is having a wonderful time. Nothing is ruined by backpackers? WTH?
